Advantages: Soothing

Disadvantages: A one trick pony...

Lava lamps are the ultimate retro accessory. They began life way back in the 60's, and haven't changed much in design since. The Lava Lamp contains wax in liquid, which rises and falls when the water around it is heated. The word 'Lava lamp' is a bit misleading, as it suggests that the product produces enough light to, say, read by - but it doesn't - the light is purely decorative.

The lamp I own, which is made by Mathmos, takes at least half an hour to get going from the moment I flick the switch - some take longer. Other generic makes of lamp can be bought, but often aren't as well made, and have a limited lifespan.

I must admit, I don't use the lava lamp very often - it spends most of its time just sitting on the shelf, but I know people who basically have theirs turned on all the time.

The lava lamp is very hypnotic, and quite relaxing - If you want to be Retro, then owning a lava lamp is the perfect start. For quality, buy Mathmos.

Summary: Ultimate accessory

I have an original 60s lamp which is still going strong. I love them.
