Advantages: Groovy

Disadvantages: Fairly expensive still, can go manky if not kept properly

I bought a lava lamp for myb 18th birthday 3 1/2 years ago. It's a small Mathmos one with purple liquid and red "lava". Groovy.

When I first got it out of the box I must say that I was rather disappointed to see that what I had just paid 45 pounds for consisted of a bottle with "stuff" in it, and a base comprising a bulb.

But it does the job, slowly, but it's great. Let me explain.

When you switch a cold lava lamp on, the liquid lights up, but the lava in the base takes a good hour or two to get going properly. So you have to not be in a hurry to get that lava flowing! Still, it is worth the wait.

After a while, or after extended use, I've seen some lamps which have developed far too many drops, and sometimes the lava actually burns. you have to not leave it on all day and all night, like they do in the Gadget Shop, to maintain it. Like I said, I've had mine for nearly 4 years now and it's as good as new.

Lava lamps bring something to every room, and they certainly aren't a kids gimmick. Any 55 year old will tell you that they are great.

One problem is that mine is in my bedroom at the front of the house, and when it's on my room glows red. Ooooh err!

Neat op - Lave Lamps are brill and not at all sad and tacky as my lovely wife keeps telling me - red light sounds a bit iffy though!
