Advantages: Fascinating and very decorative

Disadvantages: unstable

These plasma lamps fascinate me. They are an interesting addition to any room. So what are they?

Basically a plasma lamp is a large glass globe with a silver ball in the middle. The globe rests on a black case. When you switch the power on strands of light come outwards like forks of lightening. They will follow your hand round the globe. I have two of these, one pink and the other blue light. You can but them from as little as £12 but the larger they are, the more they cost.

These lamps are filled with gas and should be handled carefully as they can go off with quite a bang if they are damaged and pieces of glass will go everywhere. One of the lamps that I have has a black plastic tab on the bottom so that you can secure the lamp to stop it being knocked over.

I really like these lamps and find them fascinating but I don't think they are safe around young children unless they are secured to a surface. They can be very unstable.
