      Very helpful

A great desk once it is assembled.

I had been thinking about getting a new computer desk for a while, after deciding that my old one was starting to look a little shabby and I would actually prefer something smaller too. My old one was a good few years old and had orginally been a corner-style computer desk with shelves above and below. I never really liked it to tell the truth and after just a year, I removed the shelving from the top part to be left with just the desk as I thought it was too big, despite buying a corner-style desk thinking it would save on space. Even after removing the top part, I still never really liked it.

So this time I knew I wanted something smaller and instead of a corner-style desk I decided to opt for the usual standard style. All I really had in mind was a smaller desk and maybe a beech wood design to fit in with other furniture I have.
I was browsing on Amazon when I came across this Maja Computer Desk with a beech finish. Both the style and the price ( £44.33) appealed and a quick check of the measurements after getting my tape measure out, showed that this would be the ideal size I was looking for and so I ordered one. Better still was the fact I had enough Amazon vouchers in my account to pay for it entirely with vouchers and the delivery was free.

I also noted that three previous buyers had not mentioned any major problems and as I was looking for something that would not be too complex to build, I felt certain that this would hopefully prove to be plain sailing in terms of putting it together. I am certainly not a fan of putting together flat-packed furniture or someone who enjoys the challenge of it all.

As I was enjoying a free trial of Amazon Prime, this item qualified for next day delivery and sure enough, my desk arrived the very next afternoon. It was well packed in a flat cardboard box with plenty polystyrene to protect the contents.
The boxed weight is 19kg and I dragged it along the floor to where I was going to assemble the desk before opening it up and checking the contents.

Inside was a sheet of paper listing all the contents as well as a step by step diagram guide to assembling the desk. I checked and counted all the screws etc were there as well as the desk panels and found it all to be correct. There were actually more screws included than needed.
The instructions also informed me I would need a hammer and screwdriver.

I began at step one and studied the diagram for a minute or two before getting the parts needed to begin assembly. I must point out here that the diagrams were not particularly large and there were no written instructions. You have to follow the diagrams only and this was a little tricky at times as it wasn't exactly clear in one or two places. It was quite difficult to see exactly what screws to use in a couple of places and positioning the draw runners was also unclear.
I was actually very thankful to a reviewer who pointed out a very helpful tip that the smallest screws are for attaching the runners for the sliding drawer, as this was not pointed out on the instructions.

All was going fairly well or so I thought, as I assembled the sides along with my partner helping and we then assembled the top part and fixed the castors to the bottom and all was looking good. There were no problems as all the drilled holes etc were aligned perfectly.
I will point out that it is handy to have someone to help you, especially when fixing the top of the desk to the sides.
And so the time came to fix the sliding drawer into the desk, which was explained by a diagram showing how to slot the drawer in at an angle to align the wheels on the runners.
I slid it in, but found it just wasn't right and wouldn't move. I quickly realised something was wrong and we ended up removing the top of the desk again just to be able to free the drawer.
Looking back at the diagram I could not see what I had done wrong. My partner then realised by studying the desk, that the parts of the runners which fixed to the sides of the desk should be swapped over. I had fixed the runners to the wrong sides and felt pretty foolish till I checked the diagrams again which proved I had followed them exactly as printed! The lack of close-up pictures and no written information makes for confusing instructions here and if it had not been for a fellow buyer pointing out which screws to use ( which obviously they had realised after making a mistake too!) then I maybe would have made more than one mistake when assembling the desk.

By looking at the desk when the drawer would not move, it did not take long to ascertain there was a problem with the runners and once found, we quickly put it right and swapped the runners over and then the drawer slid in perfectly. We then attached the top again.
Finally all that was left to do was position the shelf under the desk at whatever height you choose from the variations given. The shelf slotted in easily and the desk was assembled and looking good. If only I had managed to put it together first time around with no problems then this desk would have taken less than an hour to assemble, but instead it ended up taking over an hour and a half.

Once assembled, it does look really nice and I am actually impressed with the quality as it looks more expensive than it actually is and is also a solid piece of furniture.
As it is on castors, then moving it to where I wanted it was no problem at all. Changing over the computer from the old desk to this desk proved easy enough too, without having to disconnect everything. As the tower part of the computer sits on the end of the desk on the outside of the side panel and not under the shelves, it meant there was no fiddling around under the desk with the wires.

The measurements of the desk are 800 x 750 x 500 mm which is ideal for my needs. Smaller than my old desk which is what I wanted, but still big enough for my needs with shelving underneath for storage and standing printers and speakers upon. The bottom panel is also curved to allow space for your feet.

The assembly niggles could easily be improved by clearer instructions with helpful written hints and tips and despite my experience assembling the desk which was more than a little frustrating, I am happy to recommend it, as it is a really nice desk once assembled and still worthy of five stars for the desk itself. The instructions are however a bit of a disappointment and could easily be improved.
