Advantages: Nice kitchen, inital helpful service.

Disadvantages: Dreadful customer service, Dreadful fitting, Poor quality kitchen

Chose a Devonshire kitchen with integral appliances in March 2002 to fit the theme of our old cottage. MFI staff helpful, but then of course they wanted me to spend £6,000 on a kitchen didnt they?!! Fitters duly arrived as planned at the end of May. Kitchen looked great. Thought I would christen the dishwasher, opened the door and couldnt close it! Called MFI, a week later fitter arrived, blamed the other fitter for not fitting it correctly, did the work then left. Very messy job I might add. Brushed all the hardcore from the walls under the units.

As I was becoming more familiar with the kitchen it appeared that the 'cut out' for the butler sink wasnt straight and to boot there was a two inch 'splinter' where the drill had slipped and wood removed leaving a deep indentation in the wood. The sink taps also continually wobbled and the back fell off one of the cupboards when I put a packet of rice in their,! Only way to fix this was to take the cupboard off the wall. Oh and the fridge just stopped working!

Anyway as I was having a bit of a moan at my partner that our new range cooker looked wonky in the 'fireplace' it became apparent that the worktop to the right of the cooker wasnt straight! It wasnt the cooker after all. Out came the tape measure, the worksurface had been cut 4 inches too short!

Contacted MFI. Manager not available! Message left for him to contact me! No return call. More and more phone calls later ( I lost count) more and more ignored calls. Then we noticed that the wooden worksurfaces had started to warp and split very badly indeed, despite regular oiling and maintenance! The fridge still didnt work, the unit was still broken, the sink looked dreadful, the taps still wobbled four months down the line? Now our patience was wearing a bit thin Im afraid, not to mention the lightness of £6,000 it cost for the kitchen. I expected better really.

More phone calls were m
ade, and then one day I just happened to be passing the store, so I popped in. To my amazement three minutes later I was sitting opposite the manager discussing the problems with the kitchen and the lack of customer service. Apparently the old manager had been dealing with or rather he hadnt been dealing with it!!

In November 2002, the faults had been rectified and I duly carried on admiring the new kitchen. ..............

Okay, now. Last week, August 2003, I noticed one of the units had started to crack and warp! Looking closely at the other 12 units it was evident that they too were cracked and on their way to warping! Dreading the prospect of waiting another four months I contacted MFI who said to contact the Head Office who will deal with it. New kitchen cupboard doors are to be delivered at the end of the month. Dont know when they will come and fit them....probably some time this year...hopefully.

It shouldnt matter what you spend on a kitchen you should still expect a decent service!
