Advantages: Inexpensive, easy to attach, smooth finish
Disadvantages: No additional padding
This cover was purchased to fit a fairly standard sized large ironing board. (It's a Wilkinson own brand board, measuring 124cm by 40cm.) Helpfully, the packaging to this cover gives the exact measurements of board that this has been designed to fit. It claims to fit boards up to 122cm by 43cm but, despite our board being slightly larger in length, this proved to be an absolutely perfect fit. The sides of the cover are fully elasticated so there is an element of flexibility when fitting this into place and, unlike the JML version, this literally took seconds to get into place even single-handedly as the thin fabric is so easy to manoeuvre and stretch. The fitting instructions are printed on the back of the packaging and are very straightforward with the advice being to fit the wider end of the ironing board first. Once in position, we were pleased to discover that this cover fitted the proportions of our board perfectly with no excess fabric. This resulted in a perfectly smooth surface which is absolutely essential for successful crease-free ironing.
The appearance of the fitted cover is surprisingly good. There really is no evidence to indicate that this is not the original cover. There are a range of colours and designs available although all are fairly neutral and inoffensive, unlike the pretty garish selection offered by JML. Ours is a pretty colourful stripey number that gives this a high quality appearance.
Unfortunately, on the first use of the newly recovered ironing board, the main drawback of this thin cover became very clear. Our board is metal based, with several ventilation holes across the length. Sadly, because the fabric of this cover is so thin and doesn't feature any additional lining, the patterns of the holes on the board were transferred on to the ironed garment! This was not a great look on my husband's work trousers! This cover does claim to have two layers, including the felt backing, but this doesn't really compare to the much thicker underlay incorporated within its JML counterpart.
Fortunately, we were able to resolve this issue by reinserting the separate thin foam underlay that our original ironing board cover came with. We did find that reattaching the cover with this foam layer in place was a little more tricky than the original fitting had been. In this instance, it definitely required two people to get the cover back into place, as one of us also had to keep the foam in position.
Once fitted, with the improvised underlay, this Minky cover has proven to be a good buy overall. It is a perfect fit and the smooth surface of the fabric lends itself perfectly to ironing (sadly, the same cannot be said about me!)
This was a fairly inexpensive option, certainly compared to the extortionate cost of replacing the entire ironing board, and cost just £5.50 from Wilkinson. The only thing to bear in mind is the absence of any underlay, given the very thin nature of this material, so it may need to be supplemented with another layer as we have done. That aside, I'm happy to recommend the cover as a cheap replacement ironing board cover that looks as good as the original cover did.
Summary: A good value replacement ironing board cover although extra padding may be needed
