Advantages: Hassle Free

Disadvantages: ££££££

We decided to take the plunge and 2005, will see us getting a new kitchen. The first thing I did, was to go on-line and start getting a few brochures etc etc.

I managed to get a short-list of Moben, B&Q, Magnet & Kitchens Direct.

Now, the guy from B&Q was a 'wide boy' and I wasn't spending my hard earned money with him. Magnet, wouldn't come out to me, I had to go to them. So that left Moben & Kitchens Direct - which incidentally are the same company.

The glossy Moben brochure arrived, but with no prices. Personally, this means to me, ££££'s.....

So we telephoned them and was advised that one of their consultants would call, and give us an exact price.

On the morning of the visit, they telephoned to say that the guy had broken down, and an 'Area manager' will be with us about 2 hours late. I began to have visions of doom. But the guy turned up and was nice enough. He was polite and attentive (as you'd expect from a salesman). The only hard sale was the credit deal, but as I had a good deal from the bank, he didn't push too hard.

Anyway, he left with a price - "That is only valid for 1 week!", he explained that the offer ends at this time. DON'T BE FOOLED. The offer WILL be available next month. So we phoned him back 2 weeks later, we received much humming and 'erring'. He promised to 'see if he can still offer the amazing low price' he had quoted and surprise surprise, he could. I paid the deposit with a credit card (top tip - always pay the deposit with a credit card, just in case).

Delivery was promised about 3 weeks later, with fitting the following week.

In the meantime, I used Castle Builders, who Moben recommend, and I can also add my recommendation. While they were not cheap, they turned up on time and completed the work to a high standard.

The Kitchen turned up, a little late. This was due to Moben trying to deliver the kitchen in a MASSIVE artic lorry. Just how they reckon anyone who lives in a town/ city can have their kitchens delivered this way!!! You have to pay the driver the remainder of the invoice on delivery.

Anyway, the two fitters turned up. They worked very hard. Additional contractors turned up from Castle, for all the new building regulation work, cross bonding etc etc.

The final result, is a fine quality kitchen. But, I still think a bit pricey. (£9100)

In Summary:

Get a good deal from a bank for the loan.
Don't be pressured into buying now. The offers will still be available next week.
If you want builders, use Castle. They are good, but not cheap.
Pay the deposit/ remainder, by a credit card. This gives you extra protection and if like me, you're credit card gives you rewards, I now have £90 of M&S vouchers.

Summary: Good quality Kitchens

I totally 2nd Bigsimons advice and informed advice on use of your credit card, the fact that the offers still remain weeks and months after. In the real sense there really is no offer believe me because they know how to work their costs. ignore all that natter of sales gimick language to lure the customer. if you like what you see are hapy with the deal take a risk but don't for a moment believe you've just got a bargain.

The 1st. question I asked the pleasant sales lady was, 'What if this was not a 50% offer deal?' I'm yet to have my kitchen fitted because of their inconsistency and lack of professioal supervision to follow up every stage of their kitchen, and thats another story, but what i want to say is MOBEN is advertising almost on all tv BBC channels almost every hour and are still on 50% on all 'kitchen appliances and fittings. ha ha ha..!!

To all you out there going for Moben, yes their stuff looks superior no doubt but find out who is going to fit, clear the old kitchen and it'll be helpful you have a list of questions to ask them and insist they answer those questions, and before you get bullied into signing the surveyors papers check and check again and if possible tell them to give you a day to look over and they supply you with an envelope to post it off to them. These guys are tough and the civilised sweet behaviour towards customer I am yet to give them any positive points on. - JD
