A beautiful rug ideal for anyone who feels the cold.

      Wool Knee Rug From www.50plushealth.co.uk
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------

My mum recently celebrated 80 years of age and sadly is not in the best of health. She suffered a severe stroke in 2007 and although doctors were not optimistic that she would recover, she has gained some use of her limbs but remains severely disabled. One of her main complaints has always been that she feels the cold. She has the heating on very high, but somehow her circulation doesn't seem to work as well as it should, and she sits with hot water bottles beside her for comfort.

For her birthday Dad asked me if I could find a lovely wool rug for her knees, but preferably one that wasn't too large as he also wanted it to be able to be used when she was in the wheelchair. She has always loved Scotland and so I wanted to find a tartan one if at all possible.

I was delighted to find just the thing on a website that was new to me at www.50plushealth.co.uk. This is a website aimed at customers over the age of 50 and works on a club basis. It is free to join, and you are then entitled to discounts off health products that are sold within their club shop. Also by clicking through to their affiliates, which includes John Lewis and Marks and Spencer, you are able to collect points which you can also use as discounts from items in their shop. I had seen a beautiful knee blanket there which I thought was perfect for mum. There is an initial discount of £8 off your first purchase, and as the rug was £14.95 this brought the price down to an amazing £6.95 before postage, and furthermore this purchase earned me a further £5 off my next purchase within the club shop. Initially I joined just because I loved the blanket so much - it was the best one I had seen for mum, but since then I have purchased several other items from the club shop which are excellent value for money. Everything in the shop is not all about disabled living -there are many items that I would purchase from chemist shops and which are day to day necessities for all ages. There is an excellent section on allergy goods which I would purchase for my son, for example, who is severely allergic to dust mites.

So having ordered from the site using Paypal I waited to see how quickly my order arrived. There is always a degree of trepidation when using a new site, but I was confident as according to their website they set up the Bupa on line store, and currently the 50+ club has 28000 members. The blanket arrived 48 hours later and the delivery charge was excellent at only £3.95.

I was so delighted with my purchase. Although the blanket was originally available in two choices of colours - Antique Buchanan Tartan and Dark Maple, the former was out of stock so it was Dark Maple that I ordered. The rug is 100% wool and measures 54" by 36" so is just perfect for putting over the knees. I thought the colours were absolutely gorgeous -rich autumnal shades, and the quality was superb with a lovely rolled fringe. As the rug isn't too large it is easy to carry, which of course is important when the recipient is disabled and her carer also elderly.

Being 100% wool this blanket imparts so much warmth and mum is delighted with the cosy feeling it gives her. She also takes it in the car when she goes out with dad, especially if she has to sit and wait for him, as sometimes in winter she prefers to remain in the car rather than go through the effort of transferring into the wheelchair. When she does venture out it keeps her snug and warm, and she loves the rich and warm shades. The blanket is made in the UK, which also pleases mum as she still likes to buy British if she can, and support the wool industry which is so important to the UK economy.

I was so pleased to be able to find this product as knee rugs are quite difficult to source. It also pleased me as the price was excellent and I was then able to add more items to her presents including her favourite perfume.

Anything that cheers mum up has been an utter joy to me as it must be dreadful to be affected so severely following a stroke. The blanket is just such a perfect size and weight, and with its lush autumnal rich colours provides a cosy and warm and comforting layer that is so pleasing to the eye.

Where mum lives she has direct access to the beach from her house, and so dad can push her to their favourite bench carrying the rug with him. She then loves to sit and watch the boats as they sail past- so now she can do so and be a little warmer!
