Advantages: look good
Disadvantages: sharp edges can snag clothes
Rattan comes from palms there are several species which can be used they mostly come from Africa, Asia and Australasia. Thin strips / canes are stripped from the plant. Rattan is often used in furniture making.
A few years ago I used rattan canes to recane some chairs that had belonged to my deceased great uncle. One of the rattan file boxes also came from this source. Another cane file is one I use as a magazine rack this I bought new cost about £6 a few years ago. The other rattan file I have stores my needlework by my arm chair. This I bought from John Lewis I think for about £10.
I notice a magazine file for £14.00 from http://www.lombok.co.uk Laura Ashley have one for £7.99. There are many rattan baskets available at http://www.nextag.com. that are suitable for filing. I have seen rattan baskets in either wood or iron frame for stacking files.
File baskets similar to rattan are also available made of willow or sea grass. .
I find that my rattan file boxes are quite durable. Some do have one fault though. They are a but rough and if you are using for something you do not want snagged you would be well advised to have a fabric liner in your basket.
I think rattan filing baskets are a good way of storing items. I think they are attractive in the natural colour . However you can buy rattan filing baskets painted or stained a colour you could paint them yourself of course
Summary: Filing boxes made of rattan cane

- 30/04/09 I went to a funeral yesterday where the coffin was made from this and it looked stunning and so much more 'green' than using wood, Susan |
