Advantages: Great when you get a good one.
Disadvantages: Bad when you get a bad one!
I once heard someone say that it's important to get yourself a good pair of shoes and a good bed because you are in them the most. Personally, and I think my butt would agree, I would add a sofa to that list. I don't think an evening goes by where I don't curl up on my sofa and either watch a programme or film with my hubby or spend the afternoon chatting with friends while our cheeks are glued firmly to the sofa. I think if I was geeky enough to calculate then I may find that I spend exactly 7 hours, 53 minutes and 49 seconds of each day where I am sat on my sofa (that's a joke! I didn't really add it up!).
Today I can look fondly at my sofa and admire it's curves and take great pleasure in feeling the cold leather against my hand. I delight in sitting in my hubby's seat when he is at work and feeling the sun against the back of my neck as it shines through the window. I get a kick out of polishing up the brown leather with the special leather care products that I was given when I bought it. I just love my sofa to bits but dear readers, this hasn't always been the story.....................
When I was young my mum had dad had this worn out old sofa that was made out of wool. It was brown and white and was just awful. For years it was falling apart but my parents just didn't have the money to get a new one. Eventually they came into some money and decided that they should prevent their childrens bodies from being any more deformed so they went and bought a brand new one. On the day of delivery I was so excited I nearly wet myself until I saw it. It really was just another eyesore! Yes it was brand new but it looked like it should have been placed in an old Victorian house back in the 1600's. It was terracotta with a gold pattern and had puffy arms with swirls of wood here and there. When I sat in it for the first time I could have just as well have been sat on a wooden dining room chair because the fabric didn't move one bit with my weight (and I was a bit of a heffer back then!). Dissappointment was an understatement.
When I moved in with my hubby (he was my fiancée at the time) and his family I was happy to see that they had a really stylish, blocky looking sofa in blue. It looked good and I thought I'd spend many a happy times sitting infront of the TV but I was mistaken. The first time I sat diwn I sank so deeply into the cushions that I disappeared for a day and a half and the family needed to hire a crane to get me out. It was ridiculous and I resorted to sitting on the arm of the chair to save any embarrassment.
Eventually they moved out and took that awful sofa with them so my hubby and I were left to sort out a sofa of our own. We didn't have any money so when one was offered to us for free we jumped at the chance. Yet again it was one of those sofas that needed five people to help me get out of it. My great nan came around one day and she literally couldn't get up. I thought we would have to live with her and she'd end up being part of the furniture like the vase on the fireplace. Eventually this sofa broke and after shoving bits of wood under the seats, my hubby and I decided we had had enough!
We looked at hundreds of brand new sofas and eventually decided on a lovely brown, curved leather one and we end up at the beginning of this review again............
Seriously though I would recommend that you don't cut corners on a sofa because you will probably find that they will become your best friend. Also make sure you measure up before you buy; my nan paid a few hundred quid for one recently and my dad had to rush around and take the door frame off because they couldn't get it through the front door!
Summary: A good pair of shoes, a nice bed and a comfy sofa is all you need!

- 17/03/09 When I moved into my bungalow my son in law had to take my front window out to get the sofa in! It amused me as I wasn't the one doing the hard work! |
