Advantages: you can spred out on it
Disadvantages: ?
So why do we need a sofa what do we use one for , which ones are best? I have sat on and owned several sofas so here is a tale of my experiences of sofas. My parent’s sofa My parents live in a 2 bedroom cottage, used to be 1 bedroom when I was a child. They used to sleep on a put you up sofa/bed in the sitting room us children slept in the bedroom. They only slept in the bedroom when my sister got married and left home. My parents have always owned a put you up sofa that changes to a bed none of them to my mind have been particularly comfortable. Trying to be both bed and sofa doesn’t work well. There may be some that do work are comfortable but not the ones I have tried in my childhood. When Sleepydormouse (my daughter was a teenager we got her a futon for her bedroom as a bed that is fairly comfortable. The sofa’s my parents have owned have never been particularly comfortable for sitting on As a child I always preferred to sit on the floor anyway. The sofa turning into a bed is a useful idea but we prefer to sleep on the floor on our sleeping mats, (see earlier opp) but my parents are happy with their sofa. In our first home we had an old sofa bequeathed us by an old great aunt a simple 2 seater this had springs in the base was reasonably comfortable and sturdy. We also bought ourselves a cheapish cane sofa designed more for conservatory or outside , this I piled loads of cushions on was a good sofa. We passed the first sofa onto someone else who needed some seating when we bought our first new sofa .The old one must have been very old belonged to an old lady first then we had it for about 10 years The cane sofa we gave to my mum and dad we had no room for it when we got our new sofa and moved house .They still have it in their porch where they sit to watch the world go by on the village green. After 22 years now it is beginning to show wear some of the canes broken. The
sofa we sit on now to watch the tv is part of a set we have 2 armchairs which match, it is about 20 years old now. I can not remember where we bought it or whose make it is. I remember it was an expensive one but we had just received an insurance pay out on my injuries after a car crash and thought best buy a good one it would last us for years. Our sofa is a 3 seater long enough to lay outstretched on which is good. It is a very comfortable sofa it is a hollofill stuffing I believe (cant quite remember) We choose a sofa with removable covers in a Sanderson’s fabric print, as we thought with a young child easy to remove and wash when they get dirty. Now the covers are faded, slightly torn so we did look into buying new covers but for ones we liked they were too expensive, as much as a new suite. So I bought some plain neutral coloured curtain fabric and hemmed it and we use these as throws. The sofa looks fine maybe in a couple of years we will need to buy a new three piece suite but this one is still good and comfortable. I do not often sit on my sofa as I usually sit in my armchair or on the floor but I do lye on it and if I want to look at something (e.g. holiday brochures) with my husband we sit together on it. It is important if you are buying a sofa to sit on it in the shop as some sofa’s are not comfortable the distance of the front of the cushion to the back of the sofa is important as is the height and angle of the back of the sofa. Also think about the size of your room. In a warehouse the sofa will look far smaller than when you get it home. It is well worth measuring up as you might not get it through the door and if you do it might seem huge in a normal sized room even if it was fine in the warehouse. You may like a leather sofa I do not find tem uncomfortable to sit on in bare skin. On some sofas the fabric is soft and comfortable a velour. Some are rough and itchy/scratchy. Best sit on an
d try a lot of sofas before deciding which to buy. That’s all about my sofa think i might go and join my husband on it now. Thanks for reading ………… Mary

- 28/02/03 Just bought a new leather settee and chair, it's an electric reclining one, cost me the earth. Love it though, I can lie back and watch a great film. |

- 28/02/03 Great review, musmsy.
28 years ago in London, we bought two 3 seater hide chesterfield settees. One of the best furniture investments we have made (costing about £700 the pair).
They have matured nicely, the colour fading slightly from a tan to a honey-colour. The (foam) cushions have softened a bit too much, so we have put some 'supports' from Keleeneze underneath the cushions and this has worked. Each seats 3 adults in comfort. |
