I was a member of AAA in the USA, so living back in England, I became a member of the sister company AA. It was money well spent. As a female driver who knows NOTHING (nor cares to, really) this is a MUST! In my first year of membership, I had to call them out twice - not a problem. The second time was sheer stupidity on my part, but the guy still treated me courteously and tried hard not to make me feel like a fool. It is as much a necessity on long road trips, as is a mobile phone. All you have to do is call and they
are out within about 45 minutes. They'll fix your car at the roadside if they can, if not they'll tow it for you and give you a ride wherever you were going. You can get additional benefits, if you want to pay a higher premium - hotel stay, car rental until yours is fixed - I don't remember all the details as I was on a basic roadside/relay package.
While I was a member, the AA merged with Centrica, and I benefited from a cheque which was more than I'd paid for my year's membership. That was a bonus I hadn't expected but which I was glad to accept.

I like the AA - they've been around a long time, you know you can trust them. Those yellow vans are easily recognizable anywhere. Their service is excellent, and they have my gratitude for the help they've given me.
