Advantages: Cheap and very convenient

We have just signed up to AA insurance for both buildings and contents cover for our house. As we are AA breakdown members, we get a discount on insurance and it seems to be an absolutely huge one.

The AA buildings insurance that we were offered was over £100 cheaper than anyone else we tried. We did work out why this was; most insurance comapnies offer unlimited cost (actually up to 1 million) of re-building your house. Most people don't need that kind of cover. For example, our house is only worth £70,000 so unlimited re-building cost is wasted on us. But you still pay for it as part of your premium.

Our contents insurance was slightly cheaper than any other quote we had received and it is still a good level of cover, including items stolen from outside the home and our cars.

Insurance is tricky because the cheaper it is generally, the lower the level of cover. You do need to read the small print so that you are not limited to making as claim only if your break in was on a Thursday, or some other ridiculous rules.

The AA is also handy as you can do it straight over the 'phone or on the internet. No forms to fill in if you can give them your card number. Nice and easy. And cheap.
