I am a landlady and thought I was doing the best for my tenants by putting all my gas boilers under British Gas Service contract-The idea was that both they and I would have less hassle if the boiler breaks down. I was paying Brit Gas well over £1500 for 7 properties. How wrong I was.
At the first property my tenants called out engineer because boiler was over heating and cutting out. The first 3 call outs ,all the engineer did was press the reset button. After 6 British Gas call outs, none of which fixed the problem and my tenants taking out their anger on me, I finally called out a local plumber who fixed the problem in 10 minutes.
At another property, I booked a service /landlords safety certificate visit and phoned the office the following day to check it had passed. I was assured all was OK and I dutifully waited for the certificate to arrive. After 2 weeks I phoned the office and was told no, the engineer hadn't gained access to the property and so landlords certificate was not issued. British Gas had caused me to break the law by allowing my tenants to use the gas boiler without a valid gas safety certificate which could have resulted in me being fined or even sent to prison if my tenants had come to harm.
Stupidly, I still kept my contract with them until today. The engineer went out to do a landlords safety certificate at another property and said that the boiler was fine but that new legislation was coming in NEXT YEAR so the installation of the flue was not up to standard and he was failing the boiler. I query why, when the legislation is not in place now and the boiler was only taken on contract 2 years ago when it was first installed, how can he fail it? But this takes the biscuit, The engineer told the tenants he was putting a do not use sticker on the boiler but IT WAS OK FOR THEM TO USE THE BOILER as there was nothing wrong with it. TELLING THE TENANTS TO USE THE BOILER WITHOUT A VALID GAS SAFETY CERTIFICATE!
I cant run my business like this, I have cancelled all my contracts I would strongly advise any landlord not to use British Gas service contracts.
Wish I could give ZERO stars
