This is a review of the online insurance company Policy Expert, whom I had never heard of before but when I was trying to get the best price for our house insurance, I typed 'cheap home insurance' in to google and this came up as a match. I do always use a comparison website for getting quotes but like to check out the sites that offer cash back too. I think some companies who advertise a lot tend to be more expensive so I am prepared to use a lesser known company to get a better price. The company are a broker who can find the best price by searching through a number of companies they work with to underwrite your insurance.
Even better, this site is listed on the Top Cash Back website so I continued to click from this site to make sure I was eligible for some cashback. £65 was the amount offered for a buildings and content policy which is what I was after.
Get a quote
The process to get a quote was simple and easy to follow, clicking through from form to form. The best quote is highlighted at the end of the search and you are given a reference number to retrieve that quote (which is valid for several days) so you can still do further research if you wish to.
Last time I bought insurance for our house, I was in a rush as we had bought the house and wanted the insurance to start immediately from ownership, even though we were decorating for a few weeks before moving in. I had a very young baby and limited time for searching so I just went with the company we had been with before and paid over the odds for the insurance, having had to swallow a fee for cancelling the old insurance and setting up new insurance for the house we now let. It left a bad taste in my mouth and I vowed to get a better deal next time! When the old company wrote to use to advise that the policy was ending, they said they were unable to provide a quote due to the information they held on file which was quite alarming as they had insured us for the past year! This made me look elsewhere without bothering to get a quote from them as it felt like they hadn't tried hard enough to keep my custom and I was still sore from the charges they slapped on us for cancelling the previous policy. Where is the goodwill from these companies if you are taking up a new policy with them for just moving house?!
Purchase and Price paid
My total bill for house insurance was £186.87 and this was through VFM Cover. Taking into account the cash back this made a very competitive quote and beat the prices I looked at through confused.com. The cash back tracked on the TCB website immediately and this was a reassuring action for me as I hadn't previously come across this company.
When it comes to buying insurance, I just want the best price without compromising on any of the categories. In my mind I have a clear idea of how much excess I am prepared to pay and what sort of cover I want for accidental damage etc. I also want it to be hassle free, no hanging on the telephone and paperwork via email (and backed up in the post) thank you. This way I can instantly access the detail to find telephone numbers in the event of a claim and dates for renewal when the year is up.
Firstly, I have to say I have not had to claim yet from this policy so can't advise on this side of things, but when taking out the policy I would really do my utmost to not claim on insurance. I think once a claim is under your name you get penalised on the database for future quotes and end up paying out a lot more in the end. The cost for most potential claims will be less than the excess at any rate so to quote my dad; "the only thing you need it for is if your house falls down." Which is funny but I do tend to agree with him. Having said that, I do believe that house insurance is a very important thing to have when there is flooding or other structural damage done to your house.
I am just waiting for the cash back to move into the next column then I can get my hands on it! If for some reason it doesn't pay out I will update this review immediately so you can safely assume I have £65 to play with if this paragraph stands. At the moment, an exclusive offer of £66.15 is being offered from Policy Expert on the Top Cash Back site which is a great offer. It is frustrating though when insurance companies offer good deals in the month you are NOT renewing your policy as you do get penalised for cancelling policies mid-term. All I can add to this review in conclusion is that the company have a good website which is easy to use, the transaction went smoothly, I received immediate email confirmation and then postal versions of the policy too at a price which I believe is competitive in today's market.
