Virgo 3 Light Semi Flush Chrome Plated Effect
by katyj10
This is a review of B&Q's Virgo 3 Light Semi Flush Chrome Plated Effect ceiling lights. Recently we had some trouble with the lights in the house we used to live in but now rent out. Both ceiling lights in the living room had broken at the same time (we think a power surge or something caused them to break) so, after consulting with ... an electrician, we were told to install new lights.
New lights needed urgently!
We were disappointed that this had happened as we had spent a lot of money on the lighting only five years ago and the ceiling lights matched the wall lights, but the wall lights were still fine so we needed to buy something in keeping with these so they didn't look odd. Bearing in mind that we don't live there, whilst I wanted it to look nice, my main aim was to spend as little as possible to make the lights good (think like a landlord!).
Why B&Q?
I hustled my Mum to take me to B&Q on the nearest available Wednesday so that we could take advantage of her OAP discount card. I didn't have a budget in mind but I knew I wanted something chrome that took lightbulbs that were easy to find.
Good timing
To my delight, lighting was in a buy one get one half price offer when we arrived at B&Q which was perfect. I suppose a lot of rooms only need one ceiling light but ours has two for some reason. I immediately spotted the Virgo trio light as all the lighting was on display and numbered so you can see if they are in stock. I grabbed two and put them in our trolley and then headed to the lightbulb section to buy a supply to keep our tenants going for a while.
Price
These lights were £9.98 each, then with the second half price and the OAP discount (thanks Mum!) I managed to buy the lights and bulbs for under £20. What a bargain! They were a lot cheaper than the originals and also looked nice when installed.
Bulbs
The eco bulbs also fit in these lights but to buy enough bulbs for the two lights (6 bulbs) would have cost more than the lighting cost in the first place which is just ridiculous. Not so bad if you are replacing them one at a time but a hefty wedge for a house you don't even live in.
My thoughts
I liked these lights but my husband thought they looked cheap. He admitted they looked better once up though. The tenants were happy with them and there were no complaints. I would be happy to have these lights in our house too should we need to buy replacements. I think my Hubby only thought they were cheap because he knew what they cost. I just don't see the point in spending a fortune on a lighting feature when you are not there to enjoy it. I wouldn't have installed lighting that I didn't like but I am not going to throw away money.
Final word
These lights were a bargain before I got the discount and offer price. I think they are quite elegant and throw plenty of light on a room with their three bulbs. Sometimes people use lamps etc to create mood lighting in a room and don't rely on the ceiling lights all the time so as long as they look OK in the room I don't see why others wouldn't go for this style of light. I would probably not put this type of light in a bedroom given the choice, but I do prefer something a little more decorative in the bedroom. Read the complete review |

Philips LivingColours
by Misterlak
Light in a certain color can give a bedroom or other room in a house a different look. From the color red or orange gives the room more a warmer atmosphere. I noticed recently that a light color really gives a good addition to a room when I was visiting someone who used this lamp. Hence I myself went looking for a Philips Living ... Colors.
There are different versions of the Philips Living Colors. For example, there are large and small lamps, light bulbs with a remote control and without a remote control, lights in a spherical shape, and the lamps in form of a scale and they are also in different colors. It is even possible to opt for a transparent lamp. Personally I find the Philips Living colors on the pricey side, but I thought it was just worth it.
You get the following components:
- Living Colors (Black)
- Power cable
- Manual
- Carrying Case
The Living Colors Mini is available in several colors shiny and matte. I have the shiny black version which I think really suits in any interior. The lamp has the shape of a sphere with a flattened portion of the light and a flat piece at the bottom, making the Mini Living Colors upright. The design is very nice and the product is well finished.
The lamp has a color circle on the back with in the middle two buttons, one with a line and one with a circle. By moving your finger to touch the line, the lamp goes on. Subsequently you can choose a color on the color circle by touching it. It all works very easy.
The lamp actually has two functions:
One color - this can be a color on the color palette chosen for the lamp. Multiple colors - When you hold on the button with the line for a few seconds then all colors are shown in succession in a fixed order. This is repeated until the lamp is turned off.
I am very pleased with this lamp from Philips. I have the lamp on a small distance from a white wall (with the lamp facing the wall) and the light gives my bedroom a different color. I think this lamp would also be suited for a larger room like the living room.
The lamp looks good; the colors give a really different atmosphere in the room. In addition the lamp is easy to operate. I can definitely recommend the Living Colors lamp and also give it four stars. I have the mini version which you can buy for around £50. Read the complete review |

Home Living Rattan Ball Shade
by headsore
We have a honey rattan ball lamp shade in our bedroom and we bought it quite cheap for just under five pounds from Wilkinsons around one year ago. At the time our bedroom was all cream with a little splash of colour and we wanted something plain and simple and thought these looked the ideal solution.
It was very easy to fit in ... my honest opnion, and did not bend or twist as we tried to get it to fit to the light fitting on the ceiling. It will take a maximum of a forty watt bulb, but this is fine as it is in a bedroom we wouldn't want anything too harsh in there anyway. It is made from a rattan weave effect and when we use it with our dimmer switch it gives a really lovely effect as the light shines through the patterns on the shade and casts strange waves and shapes over the walls and the room in general and I find this a very soothing effect for a bedroom, in particular.
It measures between ten to twelve inches in diameter and looks really lovely and compliments the room even though we have changed the colour scheme in there now it still matches well due to its being very plain and simple.
My other half has only one complaint about this light fitting and that it cleaning it. She says it is difficult to get the dust off it properly so I will often have a go and personally don't find it too bad so long as the cloth is dry. Likewise, this is no good for a room such as a bathroom or kitchen as the moisture could possibly destroy the shade over time.
Great product and receommended.
