Advantages: Cheap, look good
Disadvantages: Could rip if care isn't given when handling
When I moved into my first home I wanted to try and find home ware as cheap as I possibly could. The couple of weeks before moving I spent hours and hours searching for good value goods. That's when I purchased these paper light shades, they looked good and, more importantly, were cheap.
** What are they **
There are three light shades in this packet, a round one like a ball, a square one and a long triangle one, they are all the same cream colour. The shades come flat packed in individual plastic covers, with assembly instructions too. I paid £4.99 for these 2 years ago and after a quick look are still available for this price.
** Assembly **
Putting the shades together and hanging them up is simple. There is a metal wire included for each shade, these keep the shape of the shade in place. Just attach the wire to the two slots in the bottom of the shade and pull the paper up around it, then attach the wire to the top of the shade and it's done. To attach a shade to a light fitting, just find the slot on the metal wire in the shade and pull the wire through. I actually got my mum to do this because I'm a shortie and she found it much easier being just that bit taller, although if she wasn't around I think I could of managed just fine.
** Opinion **
I originally just bought one pack of these shades for the main rooms in my house, the lounge, my bedroom and daughter's bedroom. After using them for a couple of months and finding them great, I bought another set to put on my landing, inside the front door and inside the back door. I can't fault these, although they are paper and quite flimsy, none have ripped or torn after being up for over 2 years. As long as care is taken when hanging these for the first time, making sure a finger doesn't puncture through the shades, I don't see any reason for these to tear. I find cleaning them quite easy, I use a long feather duster and it does the job just fine, again, without ripping or tearing.
I'd definitely recommend these to anyone looking for a cheap light fitting. They tick all the boxes for me. They are easy to clean, easy to assemble and look fantastic. At £4.99 I think these are fantastic value for money.
Summary: So good I bought 2 packs!
