“ Brand: B&Q / Type: Light shade - decorative „
When we moved house we decided that we wanted to make our spare rooms a bit special and welcoming as we do have family members staying over regularly as a lot of our relatives live over 100 miles away. Light fittings I think help make a room look nice as just a bare lightbulb looks a bit poor! I wanted something a bit special, something a bit unusual but within a certain budget I had been given by my other half.
Now, I'd never of thought of going to B&Q for light fittings as basically I don't even know where our nearest store is but on a trip to see my parents I went with my dad as he was picking a few bits up and decided to have a look. I was amazed by the selection that they had and in the end I came away with two light fittings all within budget and something special.
For the one spare room (we have a 4 bed house) I had chosen the B&Q Pearl Beaded Wire Pendant in white. Unfortunately it wasn't up in the store so I couldn't see it out of the box but I was impressed with the picture and I could have always taken it back should it not be suitable. The light fitting only requires one bulb (maximum 60 watt) and you do need to buy a bulb as it doesn't come with on.
The light fitting is basically a metal frame with plenty of thin pieces of wire hanging down with white coloured acrylic pearls fastened onto the wire. The pearls have a pearlescent finish so when it has the light shining on it you can see pastel colours such as pink, yellow and blue which even though are pale they add a bit of colour to the light fitting. The wire which holds the pearls is incredibly thin and bendy - it is silver in colour so matches the pearls well. The wire is fastened tightly around the metal frame and fortunately because there are quite a lot of pearls on the light fitting you don't really notice the white metal frame or the light fitting and lightbulb which is good.
There is no construction required as it comes pre-made so you simply need to remove it from its packaging (a slim, narrow square box which can be easily carried or put into any size car) and once you are holding it by its metal frame you just need to carefully hang the strands of wire how you want them. On the picture it shows the wire perfectly straight with the pearls all in alignment but you can bend the wire to make whatever shape or style you want. Once you have done this you just need to fasten it to your light fitting which should already be installed. And there you go!
It really is an easy light fitting to put up and I managed with no problems whatsoever and things like that are not usually my forte! When it comes to cleaning this light fitting this is where the problems begin. You cant use a duster or cloth as it is simply too tricky and where the wire finishes at the bottom it is put into a hook/ loop shape and you will catch the cloth on it. The easiest way to do it is use a feather duster and dust is gently but even with this method the little feathers can catch on the wire easily. For me, once a month I remove it and put it into a bucket of warm, soapy water and give it a quick rinse and I let it dry. Because of the colouring of the light fitting you can't see any dust fortunately!
Height - 31cm
Width - 26cm
For me this is a perfect light fitting which is slightly unique and suits most colour schemes so if we decide in the future to re-decorate we don't have to worry about replacing the light fitting. I like the fact that you can bend the wire and have the pearls however you want them but what I don't like is not being able to clean it that easily but as I said above I give it a good wash once a month and it does take a few seconds to take off and a few seconds to put back up. The fitting manages to create soft, ambient lighting which really suits a bedroom. It certainly manages to create a focal point on the ceiling.
The lighting fitting is still available from B&Q and currently costs £26.98.
