This lamp was part of my husband's lovely gesture of turning one of our in-built cupboards into a sewing corner for me. He fitted a fold-down desk from Ikea, and bought this lamp to go on the desk and give a bit of extra light for when I'm doing close sewing or stitching work.
The lamp is a desk lamp, so rather than having a clamp base it sits on the desk with a circular base measuring about the same as an average drinks coaster. The main body of the lamp is on a spring mechanism, which is adjustable so you can direct the light where you need it. Because the actual bulb is very small, it gives quite a strong intense light, almost like a spotlight, so I would say it's more suitable for close work rather than lighting an entire room. I did wonder whether the weight of the body might cause the base to topple over, but I have never experienced this as yet.
The lamp uses LEDs, which according to the Ikea website consume up to 85% less energy and last 20 times longer than incandescent bulbs. I haven't had it long so I've not had to change the bulb yet, but hopefully the bulbs themselves will be easy to get hold of from Ikea. The head of the lamp is so small, it doesn't really attract any dust because there's not much room for dust to settle. This makes it low maintenance to look after.
The switch for the lamp is on the lead, which is very long and should give plenty of options regarding where to put the lamp so it's close to your sockets. The lamp itself is available in black or white. Mine is the white one as this suits our décor in the room, and it's a very functional solution for this hobby which requires very good eyesight and sometimes fiddly work!
Currently retailing at £10, this lamp is a good functional lamp giving intense spotlight style lighting, and is best suited to desk work.
