I like it - whether you do is probably going to be a question of taste...

These days there is plenty more choice than there used to be when it comes to furnishing kids' rooms. When we kitted out the playroom, one of the things that we bought, after quite a search, was this rather unusual and quirky light designed with children in mind. As you can see from the picture it's a ceiling mounted light, designed to look like a man in a balloon, and I bought it for under £40 a couple of years ago, mainly as the green, pink and blue design matched the rest of my decor and I thought it was a little bit different.

The balloon part of the light is made of glass and houses two screw in bulbs. These have to be of 60 watts maximum and fit into the ceiling mount - the glass is quite translucent and the light itself illuminates with a gentle glow. We had no real problems mounting the light to the ceiling, carefully following the enclosed instructions which were straightforward and comprehensive. The little man in the basket is firmly attached and always hangs down straight - the little man appears to be made of wood and his pink basket has a raffia look, though he hasn't got an actual face I think he is quite characterful and cheery looking. The light itself is 40cm across so a little larger than the norm, I think it makes a real statement in the room - it's probably one of those items that you will either love or hate, but I think it's that little bit different and fun without being over babyish or girlie, it lights up the playroom perfectly, and though it's long become part of the furniture it still makes me smile every time I see it.

As the light is glass and quite thin, say of the thickness of a drinking glass, I do find care has to be taken when cleaning or removing for bulb changes - this light does seem rather prone to accumulating dead flying insects which is really my only complaint with it, overall it is very well made and the finish is good, the balloonist doesn't hang so far down that the averagely sized adults in the house could walk into it - I think the drop is about 10cm - if you are taller than the norm then this might be a consideration. The manufacturer (Massive Lighting) also make a range of designs that are more boy focused and feature planes as well as more girl orientated designs, the range is called Kico and features all sorts of lights, including pendants and spot lights, all of which are made of child friendly materials and non toxic paint, which is good to know.

Overall I have been really pleased with this light which really goes well with my room and I would recommend it, and looking at the rest of the range (google "kico lights") if you are looking for something a little bit different for your child's room, for us this was a great find.
