Master Lock Excell Laminated Padlock 50mm
by Bunnyhop2
We bought a new shed last year and due to an increasing number of Burglaries in the area we wanted to make sure we had a good lock on it. We started off with a traditional gold style padlock but although it was sold with the shed it wasn't waterproof, with all the wet weather it soon went rusty making it nearly impossible to open. We ... were shopping in Homebase and thought we'd see what they had in the way of locks and this padlock made by Master caught my eye as looking quite stylish, it offered everything we were looking for and so we bought it.
Packaging
This padlock came in plastic with a cardboard backing and was very easy to rip open and remove the padlock and keys.
The lock
This is a decent sized lock 50mm wide and having a 25mm shackle. It is quite heavy for a padlock and so gives you confidence that whatever you have used it to lock will be secure. The shackle is long enough to easily go through the clasp on our shed door but this padlock is also available with a longer shackle.
The padlock is easy to close and the key is easy to turn to open it again.
As we were looking for a padlock for our shed it was important that we bought one suitable for outdoor use which this one is. The silver colour with Master written across it makes it look like an expensive lock and would hopefully deter any would be thieves.
Price and availability
We bought ours in Homebase and although I can't remember exactly how much we paid it is currently (May 2013) £13.49. I thought this was quite expensive for a padlock but after the quick rusting of the previous one we decided it was worth paying a bit more for a lock which will hopefully last. It comes with a lifetime guarantee which reassured us that the product was made to last.
Would I recommend?
Yes, this is a high security lock which is easy to use and looks good. It is suitable for outdoors allowing you to increase the security of any sheds or outbuildings. Read the complete review |

Tesco Weatherproof Padlock
by thriftygiftyisme
=Tesco weather proof padlock=
Our poor shed in the back garden I'm sure it is the padlock that is holding it together, although there is a new shed waiting to be put up, when we get some good weather. Sure the padlock is worth more than the shed!!
=Need for a padlock=
It is not that we have the crown jewels in ... the shed, couple push bikes and his lord ships stuff, it is one of those items that you may need, so it goes in the shed, but after our shed being broke into last year, we needed a new padlock, as the other one had rusted away, but the culprits just unscrewed the metal handle. We did lose some tools - but we think the dog barking stopped them getting the bigger items out.
=Last Padlock=
He lost the keys for the last padlock, and of all places I saw this weather proof padlock, and it was priced at £4.20.
=Card=
The padlock is attached to a piece of card and all the relevant information and instructions about the padlock are on the reverse of the card.
=Size=
The padlock is 8cm in height, 5cm in width and a depth of about 3cm. Overall it is a fair sized padlock.
The padlock has a steel inner body and this is covered in black PVC which is the waterproof element and stops the rusting.
=Keys=
There are two keys with the padlock.
=Using the Padlock=
The key slot for the padlock is on the under carriage of the padlock, and this has a pop on cover, which when the padlock is in use stops any water or dust getting into the key slot.
For the first few occasions it was a pain to remember to pop the piece off, and it was tight to get on and off, it was almost shall we leave it off, then reality set in with the weather so it then became a good idea to use the cover.
=Movement=
The movement of the padlock is the same as any other, twist the lock and then to close the padlock, you need to make sure the lock is in the hole and then push shut.
Two keys come with the padlock and to open and close the padlock, the keys fit underneath the padlock. Over this key opening there is a pop on and pop off cover so that when the padlock is closed the keyhole can be left closed to stop water and dust getting inside the lock. A first I found this a bit fiddle but as time has progressed I have found this to be a useful feature as the key still slides easily into the lock.
To close the padlock the arm should be pushed firmly into the hole until it clicks and the to open, obviously it's like any other key mechanism lock.
=Would I recommend=
I would highly recommend this padlock, it has seen us through this bad winter, and looks as good as new so an excellent investment Read the complete review |

Master Lock Brass Padlock 40mm
by Abski2001
Master Lock Brass Padlock 40 mm
We have a small bike shed that we like to keep locked up and secure as it can be quite easy to see from the street and also for the more practical insurance purposes. I was looking for a cheap but strong and reliable padlock to keep it secure and picked up a Master Lock padlock from Sainsburys ... Homebase for around the three pound mark.
Master Lock is a company that specialises in padlocks and security products and was established in 1921. They are the largest manufacturer and distributor of padlocks in the world and a very reputable company.
The Lock
The lock comes in a small plastic see through packaging where you can see the lock itself before buying. I went for a 40 mm lock which has dull dimensions of 32 mm height, 40 mm width and 12 mm depth; this is the main body of the locks dimensions. The shackle part of the lock, that you hook through your bolt, is 20 mm. The brass lock area has Master engraved across the front of the body.
The lock has the standard appearance of any lock that you will see on the shelf, the main body is a shiny brass colour, and this lock is actually made of a solid brass material. The lock mechanism is silver coloured being made of hardened steel and a smooth, round tube that slots into the brass lock at one end and is attached at the other, giving you the opening mechanism. Underneath the brass lock is where you insert the key to unlock the padlock. The lock feels really weighty and sturdy which is why I went for this one and I believe it does its job well
Master Lock rate this lock as having a security level of 5, I'm not sure what this is out of as it doesn't tell me on the website, but presumably it is out of 5. The lock is designed to be resistant from sawing and filing, which is unfortunately how some people choose to dispose of padlocks.
The lock comes with two keys in its pack, which is handy for keeping one on your person and one tucked away in the house in case you forget or lose your keys. It is very simple to unlock, you basically insert the key and turn to release the shackle, then you simply secure your bolt or item you wish to lock up into the shackle curve and push it back into the brass lock. You will feel and hear a light click when it is locked into place and voila, your item is securely locked up until you use the key on it again.
Overall I am more than happy with my Master Lock and find it to be very reliable, secure and strong. The price is great too, currently costing £3.48 in Homebase and you also get a Lifetime guarantee included from Master Lock. What's not to like? Read the complete review |
