      relaxing stuff

I was introduced to Valerian a few years back by my Granny, who is very up on her medicinal products. So why did I take it? Well, I had been suffering from many restless nights because of a stressful job and my sleep pattern was up the creek. I had already come across BioForce prior to trying Valerian, having experimenting with Echinachea.

The idea behind this product is to promote natural sleep and restore a sense of wellbeing in the body. The effect does not always happen straight away and can take a few days or even week to get to work.

The product is to be taken orally and can be taken neat or dispenses into a glass of water and consumed in this way. The combination of Valerian and Hops increases the potency, though you can buy the Valerian on its own. I used to take mine neatly, by dripping the mixture onto the middle of my tongue and letting it soak into my system. I would usually take the stuff an hour or before bedtime.

The taste is best described as plant-like. I found it not unpleasant and rather like munching on forest ferns! The herbally taste is refreshing, though you might find it leaves an odd aftertaste in the mouth and need to wash it down with some water.

Did it work for me? I tried it for a month and I did see a drastic change in my sleeping habits, but I thin the product did prepare me better for my night's sleep by inducing a sense of calm. I found it effective when one sits in bed and reads and it starts to relax you a little. I did only feel changes in my calmness after a week or so of using the stuff, so no instant results either.

The price hovers around seven to eight pounds for a bottle. I am not totally won over but it might be a good aid for sleep and relaxation.

        Disadvantages

A very valuable helping hand for minor sleep problems

Ok, let me firstly explain why I used this product - as there may be a few uses for it....

A couple of years ago I stopped working full time in a very stressful job and went into full time education, not long after this I began problems with sleepless nights which I have since put down to my change in lifestyle. After working 40 - 50 hour weeks for many years and then suddenly stopping and taking on the much more relaxed lifestyle of a student (although I still feel constantly to be rushing around with one thing an another!) I guess I just didn't feel as tired out any more.

I haven't really had a problem getting to sleep in the first place, or rarely, it was more that I have been waking up regularly. Added to this, as I was not getting into a deep sleep, I started to have dreams (mostly unpleasant ones unfortunately!) which increased the number of times I was waking up - sometimes this was literally hourly - and added to the feeling that I had generally had a restless nights sleep, which meant I felt exhausted all the time.

I didn't want to go down the route of sleeping pills - and anyway when I mentioned it to my doctor whilst visiting him about something else he was not much use at all! Someone suggested I try Night Nurse (silly idea when I wasn't actually poorly I know!) but this was no use at all. I tried spraying my pillow with lavender, drinking Horlicks before bed etc etc. Nothing Helped!

I then decided to go all spiritual and buy a Dream Catcher, thinking that if I could get rid of the dreams I could get more sleep. I wasn't sure it would work but hoped for a placebo effect! Anyway, it didn't work, not one little bit and was a bit of a waste of £8 (although it does look very pretty!).

I then turned to my local health food shop where the lady is very helpful and knowledgeable. As soon as I explained my problems she instantly recommended the Valerian-Hops complex, explaining that it should help me get into a deeper sleep and wouldn't leave me feeling groggy in the morning.

It cost me £9 for the bottle containing 50ml, which I was more than willing to pay and I have to say the bottle seems to be lasting quite a while. It is described as a 'fresh herb tincture' and contains Valeriana officinalis (Valerian) and Humulus lupulus (Hops) which are both known remedies for mild insomnia (and can also apparently be used for hyperactive children).

The way it works is by taking 20-30 drops added into a glass of water or juice 30 minutes before bedtime. Simple as that. It tastes absolutely foul but it's over and done with in a minute!

I have to say that the very first night I tried this I only woke up once and although I felt I had dreams I could barely remember them, so I must have been in a deeper sleep. I did feel very tired when I first got up ut not what I would call groggy at all and withing 15 minutes or so I felt fine. After the second and third nights I slept right through without waking at all!

After using this remedy for a week or two my boyfriend said he could notice a difference in me, that I looked so much better and actually looked like I'd been getting better nights sleep. I then went away for a few days and forgot it but I actually carried on sleeping fine (whether I had somehow trained myself to sleep better??). A couple of weeks later though and I have started to take it again.

Whilst I don't think this would be a miracle cure for someone with severe sleep problems it is invaluable for someone with problems like myself and I think it can just be used all the time or on and off as required. You don't feel groggy, you do feel better and it is well worth the price!

I really feel a million times better from using this and that's something I wasn't able to say about any other method of helping me sleep!!!
