Shangri La (Bangkok, Thailand)
by shoe_gal_84 I used to be a travel agent, so spent a LONG time researching hotels for our honeymoon in Thailand. There are just so many hotels in Bangkok, it can be a little overwhelming at first and it's hard to know where to look. I soon learned that hotels tended to either be in 'the city' or 'the river' areas and quickly decided that we would be ... best suited to the hotels by the river. My husband and I were really keen to see what Bangkok had to offer, but really liked the idea of not staying completely in the hustle and bustle of the city (not for our first visit anyway). So, I looked around and the best deal we could get was for the Shangri La. It looked amazing on the website and had really great reviews on Trip Advisor, so I decided to go for it! This hotel has a ridiculous amount of room types as there are 3 different parts to the hotel. The Shangri La wing (standard rooms), the Horizon Club (slightly posher rooms on the top floors on the Shangri La wing) and the Krungthep Wing (posh rooms in a completely separate part of the hotel). We could only afford to stay in the Shangri La wing, and booked an executive room (one above a deluxe/standard room). As it was our honeymoon, we were due an upgrade, if there was one available; so we hoped for the best. I also sent an email to the hotel a couple of weeks before we were due to travel to let them know that it was our honeymoon. I received a reply within a couple of hours stating that they would do what they could - very impressive! We arrived in the Shangri La a bit hot and bothered, straight off a 12 hour flight from the UK and only 2 days after our wedding. The reception staff were so friendly, and upgraded us as we were on our honeymoon. We stayed in an executive room with a river view and a balcony on the 12th floor. The hotel is immaculate and just stunning in it's decor. Our room was beautifully decorated with a HUGE flat screen TV, fresh fruit and the bathroom was massive - we had a shower and a bath, as well as the lovely Shangri La toiletries! The balcony was incredible, we spent so much time just sitting there watching the world go by on the river. The hotel staff literally could not do enough for us. On our first full day we came back to the hotel to find a card congratulating us on our wedding and an amazing chocolate heart from their chocolate shop downstairs. On the second day we had another card, lovely flowers and rose petals on the bed. The swimming pool was fantastic. We used it once in the evening and it was just perfect - we had the pool to ourselves! It was a decent size, and had plenty of sun loungers, it even had an area in the pool with bubbles which was lovely. Breakfast was out of this world - I have never seen so much food on a buffet before! There really was something for everyone, but it was all amazing. There were Thai specialities alongside your typical fry up, as well as exotic fruit, all kinds of breads and pastries. There were also chefs who would cook eggs or omelettes to order, these were divine! We didn't eat in the hotel (apart from room service one night) as it was very expensive. The one night we had a drink in the bar, our bill (for 2 drinks) cost more than our 2 course meal. There were around 5 different restaurants in the hotel, all of which looked lovely, but they cost more than we were prepared to pay, plus we wanted to get out and about in the city. As mentioned, we ordered room service one night as we got back very late and hadn't eaten. We both ordered spaghetti carbonara, which came very quickly and was delicious! The location is good. We didn't want to be right in the city centre, and being by the river certainly suited us well. The hotel is right by the Skytrain which is really easy to use (about 60p to get most places) and also by a pier where you can get a ferry to the Grand Palace. We walked out and about from the hotel, where there are lots of markets and little shops, this all felt very safe. One night we got a taxi to take us to a fairly busy area for dinner, which was well priced and we got a Tuk Tuk back to the hotel. On checking out, the reception staff couldn't have been nicer, and really did make our stay extra special for us. Overall, we loved our stay here and wouldn't hesitate to come back. Holiday Inn Express (Elkhart North, USA)
by catsholiday Holiday Inn Express Elkhart North We booked this hotel through loyalty points so we had two free nights B&B. We chose this one because it was pretty close to Shipshewana and also drivable distance from Chicago O'Hare where we were flying from when we left the USA this time. When you use your Priority points each hotel charges ... different point values and we got two nights here where in other hotels in the same chain we would have only got one night. ARRIVING This is a chain hotel, one of the Holiday Inn Express hotels which we have found to be of a pretty good standard wherever we have been. This was no exception. We were welcomed and given our key card for our room. The lady at the check in desk explained where we would find breakfast in the morning and what time it was available. She also pointed out the little gym and the pool. After this she explained where we could park the car for easiest access to our room. THE RECEPTION AREA As you enter the hotel there is a sitting area with comfortable chairs where you could meet friends or sit and read if you chose. The breakfast area is sort of divided from this main area by a curved wall so that it made it more of a separate room than in some other hotels. I liked the fact that this was sort of separated off but was still easy to find and had a reasonable number of tables too. The reception desk was to the right as you enter the hotel. THE POOL AND GYM Behind this main public area if you kept going you came to the pool and the small gym was a little to the right of the pool. The pool was a decent size and had windows which looked out onto the outside so it was light and had an open feel about it. There was someone in there every time I walked passed so it was obviously well used. The gym was quite small but had an array of different equipment. I saw this in use a couple of times but it wasn't as popular as the pool. OUR ROOM We could either get to our room through the front entrance and then turn down the left hand corridor or go around the back and through a door accessed with our key card which is what we did most of the time. The room had two queen beds, a tall unit with the TV and some drawers as well as the coffee making bits. Once again a coffee maker with ground coffee, sugar, UHT creamer and tea bags? How do you use a coffee maker to make tea and I can't imagine how disgusting this would be. Anyway we always have our travel kettle because of this strange habit in US hotels so it didn't matter. In this unit the safe was secreted and so we were able to put our valuables in there safely. On the desk was a light and internet connection although there was free wifi as well so I used that instead. There was also a phone on the desk. The beds shared a bedside table in the middle with a reading light which was a bit annoying as I like to read in bed and my husband falls asleep earlier so he had to put up with the light until I finished reading. The light also went through different stages of lightness and so turning it off required more than just one turn! The hanging area was in the entrance part of the room just near the bathroom and in there was also an ironing board and iron. The decor was muted with pale mustard coloured walls and a couple of nice enough framed paintings on the walls. The beds were made up with nice fresh cotton sheets and the throw at the base was a dull sort of grey. The carpet was a blue/grey colour with small pattern which was not offensive at all. I did love the fact that we had a huge picture window and that it looked out onto a mown piece of grass with trees and there was not a building in sight. This meant we didn't have to have net curtains drawn across at all and could enjoy the light coming in through the window. THE BATHROOM This had a bath with a shower over it. Once again this was a sort of moulded as one unit plastic bath and side wall so no places where mould could grown in grout which must be so much easier to keep looking clean. The room was decorated tastefully with a tiled floor and wide striped wallpaper in muted creamy colours and a large marble basin surround so there was plenty of room for all my bottles of toiletries that I take with me. There was a small collection of hotel toiletries shampoo, shower gel and soap. The towels were white and quite thick and fluffy and they were changed daily for us despite the fact we hung them up carefully. BREAKFAST This was available from 6.30 till about 10am in the sort side room off the Reception area. This was a pretty good breakfast offering biscuits and gravy and bacon which pleased my husband. Biscuits are a kind of scone and the gravy is a savoury peppery white sauce. I can take or leave it but my husband loves it when in the USA. We had cereals, fresh fruit, instant porridge, muffins, pastries and my favourite warm cinnamon buns. You can only eat one of those as they are pretty sweet but especially nice when warm. RECOMMENDED This was a very nice clean hotel with lovely, friendly staff. The only negative is that is was a way out of the city and to find somewhere to eat required quite a long drive unless you wanted a sandwich . This was a bit annoying as we spent the days out driving and sight seeing and would have preferred a hotel with somewhere within walking distance to eat as then we could both enjoy a drink and also we were sick of being in the car by then. So nothing at all wrong with the hotel especially as our stay was free but shame it was so far from the nearest place to eat. We solved the problem on our second night by eating lunch out and then bringing some fruit for us to eat in the room. Thanks for reading. Metropark Hotel Kowloon - Hong Kong (Hong Kong)
by anwar7 I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Australia. As the flight is a very long one, we decided to stop over in Hong Kong for a few days on route. I wanted to stay in a hotel that was centrally located but not too expensive. I was also interested in hotels that offered a pool to cool off! I spent some time looking on trip advisor ... before deciding on the Metropark hotel in Kowloon. I then set about price checking and found the cheapest deal was by booking through booking.com.We paid around £150 a night for a family room without breakfast. The room information stated that it slept 2 adults and 1 child. The hotel. ******** We arrived at the airport after an exhausting 11 hour flight. I was really impressed by how clean and efficient everything was! We had intended to take the hotel shuttle bus to the hotel, but the helpful man behind the information desk suggested a taxi would be cheaper for us. The taxi system is also very efficient and we were soon on our way to the hotel. On arrival the taxi was met by a member of staff who took care of our luggage. We arrived at about 10 am, long before the official check in time. However we were told our room was ready. The check in process seemed to take forever! We took the lift to our room and I was dismayed to find just 2 single beds! The room was small and I really didn't think there would be room to add another bed! I left my tired and grumpy children in the room whilst I made the trip back to the reception area. There was now a long queue so I had to wait for about 20 minutes! I explained the problem and that I had paid for 3 beds! After a lot of discussion with her colleague it was agreed we would be given a bigger room with an extra single bed- result! However the check in process had been slow and not particularly friendly! Not the best start! The new room was much bigger. The room contained a double and single bed with desk and chair. The room was airconditioned, essential in Hong Kong! The bathroom was quite spacious with a bath and shower over. There was a good selection of toiletteries and lots of large white fluffy towels. There was a mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities. I was a bit disappointed that there was no fresh milk but only sachets of powdered milk. The décor was a little tired but the room was really clean and the beds comfortable with cotton sheets. Overall I was happy with the room! Other facilities. ************** This is a large hotel with 487 rooms and 19 floors. There is a good lift to all floors. On the top floor is a small rooftop swimming pool and fitness room. On arrival at the pool area you will be asked to remove your shoes and given slippers to wear. There are also pool towels for guests to use. The pool surround has loungers and tables and chairs with sunshades. The pool itself is really clean and it was lovely to swim in the cool water after the heat of the city. The fitness room is small and has a running machine and weights from what I could see. When we were there the fitness centre was always empty. The hotel offers a free ½ hourly shuttle bus service to Mongkok and Tsimshatsui. We went to the latter as it is close to the ferry port. A trip on the famous star ferry is not to be missed! The Mongkok area is home to the shopping district and many of the markets including the well known ladies market. The hotel is well situated and just a 15 minute walk to one of efficient MTR stations. It is also near to restaurants and shops. However bear in mind that Hong Kong can be really hot with high humidity and walking may not be fun! The hotel has several restaurants including the expensive house of Tang and the cheaper palm court. We ate elsewhere during our stay as I find hotel food is often overpriced! We did take the buffet breakfast on one morning and it offered a good selection of all you could eat including cooked breakfast, cereals, pastries and lots of fruit bread and toast. At a cost of 110 dollars each (about £10) it wasn't cheap! There is a cake shop next to the hotel where you can buy reasonably priced yummy pastries for a cheaper breakfast option. There is also a supermarket about 5 minutes walk from the hotel where I bought fresh milk to keep in the mini bar fridge! The hotel offers free broadband in all rooms. There are also computers located in the reception area that are available for a small charge. We decided to take the hotel shuttle bus back to the airport and paid 110 dollars each. The bus is fully air-conditioned and the journey was hassle free although a local taxi would have been cheaper I didn't want to wait whilst one was ordered. During our stay the staff were really helpful and friendly with the exception of the reception staff! When we checked out I was surprised to find items had been charged from the mini bar. As I knew that no items had been taken I questioned the charge. It took a long phone call to housekeeping before the mistake was admitted and the charge reversed! Overall we all enjoyed our stay at the Metropark although first impressions hadn't been good! The hotel offers good value for money and is conveniently situated to many of the cities attractions. The free shuttle bus is a real bonus as is the lovely roof top pool. I would definitely stay at the Metropark again and just hope they retrain the reception staff! Read the complete review |
