Advantages: great atmosphere, cosy rooms, washing machines!
Disadvantages: none!
If you are looking for a place to stay in Quebec City, I'd like to recommend "Accueil Bourgault" bed and breakfast. We found this place completely by chance as we picked it from the board at Quebec airport. Being in a French speaking area I was rather apprehensive when I phoned up, but thankfully the owner spoke English and said that there was room. When we arrived at the B&B we were impressed. It was situated at the foot of the hill on which Quebec stands. The building was plain and looked like a normal house but it was lovely and bright with window boxes full of flowers. When we entered it was as if we had entered someone's living room! The only way I can describe the owner was as a "Madame". She must have been in her late 50's or 60's with her hair wrapped in a tight bun, you just knew you didn't want to get on the wrong side of her. This was really misleading though as she was lovely and treated my three friends and I as "her daughters"! As soon as we entered she offered us some lemonade and a seat. Madame then gave us a map and showed us how to get into the old town of Quebec. We actually had an apartment as all the rooms were full but we were still paying the room price! Our apartment was across the street from the main B&B but we still had breakfast in the B&B. It was wonderful. There was a little hall, a living room with a sofa bed and TV (I watched Corrie!), a big bathroom with a shower and a bath, a large double bedroom and a lovely kitchen. There was everything you could possibly need in the kitchen to cook whatever you wanted. There was hot water and the electricity was included. It was like someone's home as there was plants, pictures, ornaments all over the place. It was really homely and comfortable. Breakfast the next day was an experience! All the guests sat round a huge long table and Madame and three girls served breakfast. As only Ma
dame spoke English, breakfast was a bit hit or miss. The table was covered in food that you could help yourself to including muffins, cake, fruit, bread and cheese. Cooked for you especially was bacon, French toast with cinnamon, crepes with apple sauce and scrambled eggs. There were people at the B&B from other parts of Canada, the US and even from England so it was quite an international affair. If the table is too busy for you first thing in the morning you can have breakfast in the gorgeous garden. The garden is full of flowers, ponds and some impressive garden decorations, I particularly remember a large stork! When we had breakfast outside, Madame was hanging up the washed sheets chatting away and telling us the best way to fold fitted sheets! The B&B is not too far from the main old part of Quebec, about 10-15 mins walk. You don't have to walk up the very steep hill, there are steps or even an elevator! This takes you up to the outskirts of the main town and then it's only a short walk to the tourist attractions. I really enjoyed staying here as it was so homely and welcoming and I would recommend it.
