Atlas Targa and Resort (Marrakech, Morocco)
by kat696 As a family, we visited Morrocco in January this year. I booked a family room at the Atlas Targa and resort through booking.com. At the time of making the booking, this resort was very new and I could not find a single review for it on the entire web! Based on the pictures available for this hotel I still went ahead and booked ... it. And I'm very pleased I did... ~~~A solution to a party size problem~~~ A major problem I always encounter whenever booking a room for my family is the party size. We consist of two adults and four children aged, 7, 5, 3 and 1. This means I have to book 2 rooms because a vast majority of hotels only accomadate 4 guests per room. However because of the young ages of my children, there is no way I would let them sleep unsupervised in another room in a foriegn country! After much hardship, I've found a simple solution to this, which would also be quite useful to other people with more then 2 young kids searching online for accomandation. I searched for a room for 2 adults and 2 children, then read through the hotel description to see whether they provided cots and allowed young children to share existing bedding. I've found that quite a few family-friendly hotels allow this, but you must check with them beforehand. Anyway, Atlas Targa worked out perfect for me because they allowed the two younger children to share a bed and provided a cot for the baby. So one happy family. ~~~The look and Feel~~~ As soon as you enter the lobby, you start to feel the excitement! The hotel looks very sleek and stylish with marble flooring and cool leather sofa's. The reception area is very spacious and you can get excellent wi-fi connection here which as a guest you are allowed to use for free. The resort is split into sections, so to reach our room, we had to use a route that took us outside in the courtyard, pass the pool and gardens. We didn't really mind as the weather was really good that week, around 23 degrees and view was lovely. The family room that we stayed in was brillant. Once you enter the room with the key-card, there was a kind of cloak room area where the full-mirrored wardrobe and dressing bench was. The WC and separate shower room was also off to this area. You then enter the main sleeping quarter through a doorless doorway. Here we had a king size bed and two single beds, plus a cot. All the bedding was of premium quality sheets and blankets that were changed daily. The room also had a mini fridge and an LCD flat screen TV. Fresh towels and seaweed toiletries from the hotel spa were also provided daily. ~~~Boarding~~~ With young children, I wanted to make sure I wasn't doing more running around then required. So another reason for booking this hotel was that Atlas offered full board at a fantastic price. For breakfast a buffet was provided and for lunch and dinner there was an a'la carte menu available. The food was absolutely delicious! The kitchen staff paid lots of atention to detail and catered to individual preferences. ~~~Hotel facilities~~~ The best thing at this resort was the kids club, My children didn't want to leave! a massive area was desinated to the kids club and the there was so much to do. The Creche staff were extremely friendly and made the children feel really welcome. The club was open every day from 9:30 to 12:00. Then re-opened again after lunch at 14:00 to 17:30. The resort also had a gym, tennis court, beach volleyball area, a swimming pool an oriental spa a restaurant, a night club, a snack bar, an animations area and a hotel boutique. ~~~Location, Location, Location~~~ This resort is only a few kilo meters from the Minara airport so a taxi ride shouldn't be too expensive. The resort is also a few kilo meters away from the main city area, but a shuttle bus is provided 3 times a day on the house, so it shouldn't be a problem. ~~~Overall opinion~~~ The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to cater for individual needs of guests. The cleaness of the hotel was outstanding. I absolutely enjoyed waking up, going for breakfast, without even attempting to make the beds and coming back to a freshly cleaned, sparkling room! Bliss! I would definately book this hotel again! Read the complete review |

Sharming Inn (Egypt)
by Charli_69a Sol Y Mar Sharming Inn. This was my first stay in Egypt, Sharm, and it hasn't put me off so that must be a good thing!! Travelled with boyfriend and another couple. END OF NOV 09 First Impressions: When we landed in Egypt, around, 6pm local time, the sun was setting but it was still warm. When we arrived at ... hotel our bags got taken from us by the bag boys as we checked in. The lobby isn't very big with a small lobby bar to the left and a non smoking area on the right then reception. Checked in easily but was slightly annoyed we didn't have rooms very close to each other but this didn't cause any major problems for us. The boys took our bags to our rooms and showed us how to use air con and open balcony doors. They did hang around for a while for a tip but as we didn't have any cash on us was a bit awkward. The staff do expect tips most of the time but we didn't bother unless they had outstanding service. Most staff were very friendly though especially reception. Rooms: Our rooms were of a good size with two twin beds and fresh sheets and towels. There was no balcony though just two patio doors which opened to over look the pool so couldn't sit and enjoy last bits if sun in the afternoons which was a shame! We had a TV which surprisingly showed a lot of English shows not that you go on holiday to watch TV. Hehe The WC and bathroom were also of a good size. No bath though just a shower though which was not a problem for us. The water didn't heat up on one occasion but that may have been the time of day or a slight issue that day as after that it was always hot and in plentiful supply. Towels were changed daily and all mini toiletries topped up if we used them. There was no tea or coffee making facilities which did effect me as I like a coffee in the morning so had to rush to get ready to go to restaurant to get a hot drink. Main Restaurant: The restaurant wasn't overly big but did always have a clean table available for us often by the window over looking the pool. It was very clean and staff very helpful with table service of drinks and removing empty plates promptly. The food was buffet style as expected as we were all inclusive and was kept hygienically in heated serving dishes with lids so that was reassuring. Fresh meat and pasta was cooked of the grill for you to see and add your own flavours so that was interesting. The food wasn't any more repetitive then any other all inclusive I have stayed in so I cant complain or praise that . Salad bread and soup all available at both lunch and dinner. Wasn't overly keen on the bread as was a bit sweet tasting but that must just be there way. Meats were always cooked through and salad kept cool. A small selection of cheese was on offer and the puddings were to die for. A HUGE selection form chocolate puddings, gateus , fruit, cream puddings...I could go on!! Alcohol: This was a bit limited basically none of it tasted great and it included: Local Beer Local Wines Local spirits Bacardi, Vodka, Gin, Whisky and Brandy and ouzo I don't like any of these spirits and they didn't taste to good either the wine and beer was drinkable so we coped. Couldn't buy alcohol locally because of there laws and rules. I did ask another couple who had travelled to Egypt a number of times about the lack of different alcohols compared to all inclusive in Spain or Greece and they explained it was the same throughout Egypt as they don't drink so they supply the bare minimum. Swimming Pools and Beaches. There are two swimming pool. The top always very quiet and could always get a sun bed but its very very hot up there so be prepared as the walk to the pool bar takes a bout 3/4mins so cant get a drink quick other than that a lovely area. The bottom pool is the liver of the two with the bar and entertainment which was never too loud so bearable all day. Both the pools were COLD though but we all still managed to get in even if it took some time. Pool bar serves very quickly. Entertainment around pool average. The hotel private beach a bus ride away and packed form 9 am onwards went briefly twice, beach bar serves drinks quickly and there is a long pontoon out to sea which is good to look at the fish if you don't want to go in. The sea is lovely and warm and hundreds of pretty fish. The public beach is also packed and no all inclusive drinks on there, also a pontoon out to sea. Didn't enjoy beaches overly as were too busy. General: The shops in the hotel sale most things you could need and very friendly. Bob in the handbag shop is a legend!! The evening entertainment a bit bland but did do karaoke which was a good laugh and dancing pub open 11-2.30 plays good music but you have to buy your drinks after 12. Sharm town was about 15mins by taxi and should cost no more then 20 ep. Entertainment team also provide nights out to a casino, Pacha and another club which we went on and was very well organised and free!! We went on a day long boat trip out to Ras Mohamed which was incredible and dirt cheap £30 each for 9 hours on bout 2 snorkel trips and a one to one diving lesson for 20 mins each and food and drink included best deal in the country I believe and all professional with the PADI diving. I would go back to Egypt and id probably go back this hotel last minute would recommend to young couples and friends. Don't pay more than £450 for everything though flights hotel transfers ect!!! Sofitel Le Sphinx (Egypt)
by stevek181 My Fiancée and I stayed at the Sofitel Le Sphinx hotel for three nights as part of a Multicentre holiday, comprising of a weeks cruise down the Nile, 3 nights at the Sofitel and one week on the beach in Hurghada. Egypt was a place I'd very much wanted to see for a long time, and this combination seemed like the best way to see ... as much of the country as possible in two weeks. After a tiring week onboard the boat and seeing many of Egypt's spectacular attractions along the way, we were looking forward to spending a few days exploring Cairo. Having not stayed in a Sofitel Hotel anywhere else in the world I was interested to find out what it had to offer. LOCATION - 9/10 Situated in the shadows of the awe-inspiring Pyramids, the Sofitel Le Sphinx is a luxurious 270 room hotel located in Giza, a city in the greater Cairo metropolis. The hotel itself is ideally positioned 35km from Cairo International Airport and within a short taxi ride of the Sphinx, the Cairo Museum and the pyramids (though they look closer in the brochure than they actually are; it makes them look like a feature in the hotel garden). In my ignorance, I always thought the Pyramids were in the middle of the desert wilderness, it was surprising and a little surreal to see them so clearly from the hotel pool. The location of the hotel is it's biggest advantage and also it's biggest problem. It's great that it's so close to all the major attractions. The problem is that the roads outside are ridiculously and dangerously busy. I didn't feel comfortable stepping outside the front door without my guide. The smog is unlike anything I've ever seen anywhere else in the world, occasionally obliterating the view of the pyramids. Also, the honking of horns is constant, 24 hours a day. Driving in Egypt is very much survival of the fittest - there don't seem to be any rules, and the noise just drives you mad after a while PRICE - 7/10 As it was part of a package holiday, I'm unsure as to the exact price but, looking at the website, you can expect to pay about £100 a night ( b&b) for a double room, which is very reasonable considering the location THE HOTEL - 8/10 The hotel was undergoing renovations works to the entrance during our stay. We did receive a letter whilst in the UK from our Tour Operator explaining that this was going to happen and were offered the chance to change but due to the location of the hotel we declined the offer. Disruption was fairly minimal and, when we entered and exited the hotel the workmen always stopped work to minimize the noise, and you couldn't hear any noise at all from the rooms. In general the hotel itself was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented. Upon entering, you immediately feel the sense of grandeur; the rich heritage of Egypt's past runs through the hotel just as it infuses every part of the country. Replica statues stand prominently in the spacious, marble-floored foyer, displaying Egypt's traditions and rich culture. THE SERVICE - 8/10 Our bags were quickly and efficiently taken to our rooms by the bellboy. Tips are expected, which can be an annoyance, but you soon become used to this as the Egyptian way of life. As far as the Egyptians are concerned, they are poor whereas westerners are rich and can afford it. Also, another thing worth pointing out is that few of the staff speak very good English. This is not a complaint; although we English often think we have the divine right to speak in our own language and everyone else over the world should learn to understand us, this is not always the case. This is predominantly a French-Egyptian restaurant and can be a bit of a struggle if English is your only language. I could not fault them on politeness or efficiency however. THE ROOM The room we had was huge, with two double-beds, and a relaxing and comfortable bathroom. Cool, luxurious, and peaceful, it was an oasis of calm from the chaos of the bustling roads outside. It was furnished in dark and relaxing gold and brown colours. There was access to the gardens out the back. Unfortunately the sprinklers were set to go off at seemingly random intervals, rendering sunbathing out there impossible. It was beautiful to look at however. FOOD/RESTAURANT 7/10 (Quality) 4/10 (hygiene) We arrived mid-morning, just in time for breakfast which is served 6:30-10:30. It is buffet style, including bread, meat, fruit, yogurts, juices etc. You can also have eggs etc cooked for you. Unfortunately when we arrived, which was about 1000, most the restaurant was fairly empty and most of the food had gone. Also the room was swarming with dirty great bluebottles, some of which were having a great time in the sugar bowls. When we asked for milk to go with our cereal, the waiter unceremoniously retrieved a jug of milk from a neighbouring table and plonked it down on ours. It was warm, probably having been there since the start of breakfast three and a half hours ago, and not covered, providing an open invitation to the flies. Needless to say, we went without cereal or tea. It was a huge disappointment that such a magnificent looking hotel should be so lacking in hygiene. It maybe that this was a one-off incident, but it did influence my overall opinion of the hotel. Partly due to lack of time, and partly due to being somewhat put-off by the flies, we didn't actually have an evening meal in the restaurant and so we were too tired to venture out at night and so relied on room service. The food was well cooked but pretty standard fare; burgers and chips or pasta dishes. I am sure there were more varied options in the "Romeo and Juliet" restaurant which was the hotel's attractive, Italian-style restaurant. ENTERTAINMENT 7/10 The entertainment in the hotel consists of a pool table, swimming pool bar, disco and fitness centre. The pool table was fairly expensive (although at least that meant it was always available) and the swimming pool was quite small. There were no organised activites as far as I could see. The lack of leisure facilities is really an irrelevance however, as the hotel is either a place to come on business or use as a base to explore Cairo rather than to spend any significant time. OTHER INFO Although we didn't experience any problems ourselves, we were approached by an American lady on our last day who warned us to be vigilant as she'd had money taken out of the purse in her room on a couple of occasions. We had no such problems, and anyway, I wouldn't recommend leaving a purse full of money in your hotel room in any country! Other facilities: Car hire service desk Concierge Dry Cleaning Porter Safety box Currency exchange Babysitting Air conditioning Broadband Sky TV SUMMARY 8/10 The hotel is grand, comfortable and beautiful and an ideal location from which to explore Cairo. I was impressed with the look of the hotel and the service, but disappointed by the lack of hygiene in the restaurant. We actually spent very little time in the hotel, as we had plenty of organised excursions to keep us busy. For that reason, it was really just somewhere to eat, sleep and occasionally spend a few hours by the pool. In that way it was perfect for our needs. Overall, highly recommended for anyone visiting in Cairo, would have been five stars if it wasn't for the poor hygiene at breakfast. Read the complete review |
