Advantages: Great location, open late

Disadvantages: Very limited lonely breakfast, not the most modern place

I recently reviewed the small town of Edolo in northern Italy, directly north of Brescia in the High Camonica Valley, minutes away from various ski resorts. I turned up at Albergo Angelo relatively late, something like 10pm but in the middle of winter during the holidays and the town was dead.

At the top of the town lies a square with two little bridges crossing a river, there's a cobbled courtyard and a hotel on either side of a pedestrian bridge, Alberto Angelo is on the nearest side if you've walked up from the train station.

Alberto Angelo was the only place open at the time, it has a bar/cafe downstairs and the barman was chatting away to two relatively old guys sharing some form of spirit. He summoned his daughter from upstairs who booked me in to the hotel and showed me up the stairs to the room.

The prices were reasonable at around 30 euros, in fact they go as low as about 27 euros in low season and up to around 45 euros in high season. The room was basic but clean, a little old fashioned, a very wooden smelling bed with a soft mattress and soft sheets and a heavy, itchy type of blanket on the top. There was a TV set which spewed Italian rubbish (I particularly hate Italian television for some reason!) and a small but modern bathroom, it had a slight eggy smell to it.

In the morning, I headed down to breakfast (which was included) which seemed to take quite a while to come, it was served to me in an empty little cafe that opened out on to the street, to get there I had quite an intriguing walk through what looked like an enormous dining room. The breakfast consisted of coffee, a pastry and an omelette.

This place was nothing special but the staff were quite inviting and best of all it was open on a cold winter's night! Prices are pretty good by Italian standards.

Summary: Recommended if you don't need too many creature comforts
