Advantages: lots to keep the kids occupied

Disadvantages: price

Having just come back from a trip to the marvellous Alton Towers hotel with 4/5ths of my kids I thought I would let other parents out there know just how easy and relaxing it is with kids.

My children range in ages from 15 weeks to 11 years during this visit our eldest child was left behind at home as she had just been on a school trip to disney we felt this should be a treat for the rest of the family.

Initially we phoned for a brouchure this took a while to get through as the lines were busy. It came the next day and was comprehensive and informitave so we booked that day we paid using a credit card over the phone although I beleive you can use other forms of payment either cash or cheque on arrival at the hotel.

The rates are a bit on the steep side,

A family room for 4 is between 109pounds per night and 139 per night depending on when you go and contains a double bed and either 2 singles or a bunk bed and can be themed as a garden or explorers.

A family room for 5 costs between 136 and 173 per night and contaqins a double, a single and bunk beds. And is available as an explorer room only.

There are also several themed rooms which sleep between 2 and 6 people.

The princess and Arabian night suites sleep 2 and cost between 235 and 260 per night. And contain a king sized bed.

The Coca Cola fizzy room costs between 260 and 285 per night and sleeps 5/6 it contains a double bed ,bunk beds, and a sofa bed. Also there is an unlimited supply of Coca Cola via a pump in the room.

The Chocolate Room contains 1 double bed bunk beds and a sofa bed and also sleeps 5/6 and costs the same as the fizzy drink room but this one contains a supply of chocolate.

There are 2 other big themed rooms called Nemisis and Oblivion which both cost between 260 and 285 per night also and sleep 5/6.

The last 2 themed rooms are based on a beartrix potter theme either Peter Rabbit or Benjamin Bunnya
nd they sleep 4 people they cost 170 to 195 again depending on what time of year you go.

Phew!!! On arrival at the hotel you can pull right up to the front door where you will be met by a suitable attired bell boy who will load your luggage on to a trolley to be taken to your room after check in. Your car can be parked for you or you can do it yourself it is woth looking at the fountain flowers and stone statues before you go into the hotel they are spectacular and the foyer has ever such a lot to look at from the check in desk to the lage elephant and nook with lots of different clocks.

After check in use the lift it is fabby..

We stayed in an explorer 5 and there was more than enough room to fit our travel cot in as well as all the beds. The hotel will provide a cot at no charge but we prefer our own.

In every room there is a secret drawer for the kids and they are given a clue as to where it is at the checkin desk .In it there is a tresure (which is not edible we have a child with allergies) a large resident teddy and enough things to look at to keep the kids happy while you unpack we hid the controller that allows you access to the computer games on the tv(there is a charge for this). The bathrooms are fine and well fitted out there were plenty of towels and there was also a small gift in here for the children.

The facilities at the hotel are marvellous there is a pool with spa and jaccuzzi as well as a sauna you have to book times for swimming they are available every 3/4 hour the pool is clean and well supervised there are towels supplied poolside.

There is a kids club thing that will keep the kids occupied from 2:00pm untill 10:00p.m and then they can join you in the bar to listen to the excellent singers untill 11:00p.m. the bar remains open untill midnight. The hotel offers a baby listening service wich is free and easy to use the only draw back is the phone is upstairs from the bar and resteraunt. The ga
rdens are amazing and there is a large out door chess set.

There is a continental brekkis which have to be booked this includes fresh fruit bar, with youghurts, croissants, danish pastries, mini muffins(3 varieties), and fresh bread rolls, lots and lots of varieties or cereal and unlimited supplies of tea coffee hot chocolate milkshake and fresh orange juice. This all tastes lovely you can also purchase a cooked breakfast for 4.95 for adults and 2.95 for kids this looked enormous but we did not try it.

The hotels resident charecters baby bear and pirate bill also make an appearance all through the day and take lots of time to make sure they talk to all the kids. There are also ballon artists who make sure the kids get at least 1 balloon animal each if not more.

On the down side we ate in the resteraunt on the first night of our stay and found it to be not very good and expensive it really lets the hotel down and is the only aspect we found unplesant, we chose not to eat there the second night instead filling up at the park before we left. The other negitive point about food is that if you do eat at the park at get a bit peckish later in the evening there is no snack menu or room service we bought snacks to give the kids for supper but much to there delight were chocolate!!!

We had a great time it was the perfect place to stay with kids so much so that we have booked again next year to stay in the Coca Cola room taking all of them and we are really looking forward to it.. I would recommend any one to stay there with any age of kids it is really good fun and there is plenty to do but we felt 2 nights and 3 days was long enough and more would have been to much any less far to little.
