Advantages: Comfortable and close to all major amenities

Disadvantages: .. including the red light area on Sukhumvit Soi 4.

Driving towards the Amari Boulevard hotel in downtown Bangkok, even after a gruelling 13-hour jaunt from the UK, is an enlightening experience. The futuristic exterior suggests bold, daring architectural expression that may seem at odds with some of the more traditional linear buildings that stretch towards the Bangkok skyline.

The standing of the Boulevard (not to be confused with the Amari Watergate, or Atrium nearby) is enhanced by its prime central location in the heart of Bangkok's busy commercial district, and not too far away from the bustling nightlife of this world-famous city. Indeed, its proximity to the buzz and excitement of Sukhumvit Road merely add to its popularity as a tourist haunt.

The hotel itself is a 4-star facility, with over 300 tastefully-appointed bedrooms boasting all the in-room amenities and paraphernalia one might expect from this level of star-rated hotel. I was lucky enough to be offered an upgrade on arrival, to a 'superior' room which came as something of a pleasant surprise.

The hotel's eating arrangements are good, with an number of excellent in-house outlets (including a poolside eaterie) for the traveller to relax and take some fuel on board. The range of cuisine is international; you can get traditional Thai, European, English, and Japanese, for example, most of which I partook of. It was excellently presented and cooked.

By and large, I found the staff in all departments to be courteous in that peculiarly affected Thai manner, and very professional, although I struggled to make myself understood from time to time, doubtless due to the confusing idiom of my flat northern vowels. I even get that in the UK ...

For those organised corporate gatherings and conferences, the Boulevard has much to recommend it, including several well-served rooms for those purposes.

It should be remembered though that the Boulevard is quite close to the 'entertainment centre' of Nana Plaza on Suhkumvit Soi 4, and the attendant gathering of ladies who spill over from the Nana Hotel car park flesh market until well after 2 in the morning. This might be a bit too much for some, in which case choose a hotel that's further removed from the sex traffic. But, there is a supermarket over the road, for what that's worth.

Summary: But, that notwithstanding, still a good bet, and NO bed bugs!
