Advantages: Great location, decent price
Disadvantages: Rooms small, no in-room porno
We stayed at the Bellevue Hotel in Amsterdam for 5 nights at the beginning of March 2008. I've already reviewed the wonderful city of Amsterdam separately and so this review will focus solely on the hotel.
I can't remember how we came about choosing this hotel, but it was probably due to the other half's obsession with Trip Advisor where the hotel was quite highly-rated and (importantly) quite cheap... for Amsterdam. Unfortunately because it was over a year ago, I can't remember exactly how cheap, but I think it was around £250-£300 for 5 nights for the 2 of us.
Anyway, onto the hotel...
The hotel is located in the centre of Amsterdam, approximately 5 minutes walk from Grand Centraal Station. It's also within easy walking distance of all of Amsterdam's attractions: Dam Square, Anne Frank's house, the Damrak and of course the red light district! ;)
From the outside it's a fairly traditional Amsterdamian terraced building, but is nice and modern on the inside. After quickly checking-in we were shown to our room which can only be described as... small.
If you've ever stayed in a Nite Nite hotel, you'll know how small I'm talking about, although to be fair the room at the Bellevue was a little bit bigger... but not much! The room consisted of a double bed with just about enough room to walk down either side, and about 5 feet of space at the foot of the bed. There was an en-suite wet room (with the emphasis very much on "wet") that had a shower and toilet. On the wall was a flatscreen TV - that's the wall in the bedroom by the way, not the wall in the toilet... I think that would have been a bit random!
Even though the room was small, it was pretty nice - clean and tidy throughout and had everything we needed: a TV, running water, a bed, a toilet, sorted! We see hotel rooms as a base to go to other places and we're not very fussy people, and so this hotel was fine by us!
The hotel served food throughout the day, however I can't comment on it as we're cheap people and didn't pay for it! We found a nice bakery a few doors down and had breakfast there, followed by lunch and dinner out.
The staff at the hotel seemed friendly enough, no problems there. My only complaint is that the hotel didn't have an in-house movie system. Now, I'm sorry for being all bloke-ish, but we were in Amsterdam, the city of sex and yet there were no pay-per-view (or even free) mucky films to watch! I was quite disappointed, so I'm knocking one star off for that! :)
Summary: Where's the porn!?
