Disadvantages: Not easy to find the first time
Big Milly’s Backyard, Kokrobite
The first time I heard about Big Milly’s Backyard it was from a couple of fellow volunteers who went there for a weekend and ended up staying for ten days! With a recommendation like that I felt duty-bound to check this place out for myself. I can honestly say that it exceeded all my expectations to the extent that I managed to squeeze in a further six stays there during my already hectic three months in Ghana.
I think it must be impossible for anyone to stay there just once; everyone I met there had visited Big Milly’s before or was intent on planning a return trip. This is, in part, because of the friendly and helpful staff who all seem to have the remarkable ability to learn and remember the name of every guest in record time. Combine this with an atmosphere that’s so laid-back and welcoming and within an hour of arriving you feel as though
you’re a member of a huge extended family.
Dogs, cats, chicken and sheep roam freely amongst the chairs and hammocks in the leafy, shaded garden. The rooms are cool, clean and comfortable, some with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms. The music and drumming in the evenings is wonderful, the food is excellent and the open-air bar is a great place to chill out at any time of the day. The beach and the Ocean are just on the other side of the gated garden wall. The best thing of all is that no one has to carry any cash at Big Milly’s, all of the food, drink and accommodation bills are put on to one tab that you pay at the end of your time there. All of these things help to ensure a truly stress-free stay.
In short, if you just need somewhere to chill out and de-stress or somewhere to call home during your time in Ghana then there’s no better place than Big Milly’s Backyard.

- 12/10/04 Delightful, but more info needeed: only by looking at the category I was able to realise that it's a hotel. Anything on prices, standards, people who stay etc???
