Advantages: Fantastic Attractions
Disadvantages: The constant sound of slot machines
We travelled to Las Vegas in November 2000, in a week which was untypically cold for Nevada. Originally, we intended to book through the internet but found a better deal with our local travel agent which included free transfers to and from the airport and free insurance. Our hotel was Circus Circus, a must for kids (although we didn't have any with us)! The rooms were of a very good standard and the service excellent although this is not one of the most expensive hotels. The midway above the downstairs casino was rather like a funfair with regular circus acts taking place in the middle, directly above the casino. We tried the excellent Steak House and in-house mexican restaurant which served the most delicious margharitas ever. Great Value. The main attractions on The Strip are a short walk or bus ride away, the bus costing two dollars no matter how far you travel. There just aren't enough hours in the day to do everything you want to in las Vegas, but we tried. Although not a trekkie myself, would highly recommend the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton Hotel, the $25 entrance fee is money well spent. The simulator ride is expertly done and afterwards you can enjoy a Romulan's Blood Ale in Quarks bar - great ambience and an absolute hoot! The rollercoaster ride on top on the Stratosphere Tower (1,149 feet) is death defying and certainly not recommended for vertigo sufferers the same applies to the huge rollercoaster which runs around the outside of New York, New York hotel and the scaled down Eiffel Tower at the hotel Paris. Every hotel has a main feature, the Bellagio the beautiful fountains and the Impressionist Art Gallery, Treasure Island the mock Pirate battle, the Mirage erupting volcano, the Venetian's gondola rides and beautiful decor, the list is endless. Many hotels are linked via monorail or moving walkways - a relief for the footsore. Highly recommended is the Blue Man Group at the Luxor t
heatre, tickets are a tad pricey at $75 but you will never have experienced anything quite so funny and yet bizarre before. The audience participation was great (dont worry, you don't have to get too involved if you don't want to) and it got rave reviews. We would have loved to have seen Cirque du Soleil but this is booked well in advance, recommend you get tickets early for that one. Some may think Las Vegas tacky but to visit it at least once in a lifetime is a must. I've never seen anything that quite compares. If you're not a gambler it doesn't need to cost the earth, you can be entertained 24-7 and eat the best food for very little money. Just avoid the Belz outlet shopping mall and the Fashion Show Mall, you can't help but spend on all those designer labels at half the UK price!
