This Inn holds a special place in my heart as it is where my now husband, then boyfriend, and I took our first vacation together. We were just kids really, I 18, he 19. And we have returned once a year, sometimes twice a year ever since.
One of the reasons I speak so highly of Colby Hill is because we were treated just as nicely on our first visit as we are today, despite the fact that back then we ate a dinner we had packed picnic style in our room and now we eat in their lovely dining room and splurge on eighty dollar bottles of wine. On our latest trip, just this fall, I mentioned this fact to one of the owners. She said it is their policy and is really good business, they treat each of their guests as though they are 10,000 dollars- between them and the referrals they make. It shows. Sometimes my husband and I, because we look young and are presumed not to have much in the way of money, seem to get the shaft at restaurants and the like. At Colby Hill I always feel like an honored guest and thus I highly recommend a it.
Colby Hill Inn is located in Henniker New Hampshire, just about an hour and a half's drive out of boston MA. The Innkeepers, Cindy and Mason Cobb, are a delight. It is not a ritzy or particularly upscale place but it is charming, cozy and romantic. The rooms are all individually decorated. Some come with fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. Sometimes we stay in the main inn which has a lot of character. Some of the floors are slanted, for instance and none are particularly large. Yet if on a budget, they are still charming. However, the two suites in the carriage house are easily worth your $250 dollars. They are decorated differently but both come with king size four beds, fireplaces and large Jacuzzi tubs in the bedroom as well as really nice showers. Personally, I prefer Jacuzzi suite #2 as it has two shower heads. Awesome. The suites overlook the pool outback.
The rooms have always been spotless and I know Mason inspects them himself even after housekeeeping has done their job.
Breakfast is included in your room rate, as are afternoon cookies and beverages, but it is not one of those lame continental breakfasts. You get fruit and baked goods and coffee, yes, but you also get a choice of a hot entree, usually one egg dish and one sweet dish. My favorites have been the eggs with ham and veggies in puff pastry and the made from scratch peach pancakes. After breakfast we like to take a stroll in their gardens, which we find beautiful even in winter.
Diners in their dining room are lovely! Ask Mason, the owner, to recommend a special bottle of wine. Try the poison apple martini, made with black vodka and served with a cherry. Very Snow White. And if you are a desert person, you will not be disappointed.
There are many extra things to take advantage of as well. Last time my husband surprised me with a bottle of champagne and their homemade chocolate truffles waiting in the room. They have special weekends, like their Chocolate Lover's weekend, where you can partake in cooking classes, a chocolate dinner, sleigh rides and more. If you go once and enjoy yourself, I highly recommend getting on their email list as you will be kept aprised of special weekends and deals coming up in the near future.
