On a recent trip to California, I was planning to go to the Coachella Music Festival, but didn't fancy camping there. Most of the decent hotels nearby had sold out, so I decided to extend my search to the town of Desert Hot Springs. Here I found an amazing little hotel called El Morocco Inn.

Driving up to the hotel, you wonder 'hmm, it can't be here' as it's in a quiet residential area. However, once you find it and step inside you enter another world.

The co-owner, Bruce, greeted us and escoted us into the courtyard. The hotel is similar to the Riads in Morocco - all the rooms around a central courtyard. This courtyard had a swimming pool and private hot-tub (both had hot water from the natural springs of the area). Decked around the courtyard were sofas, loungers etc all in the Moroccan style. The rooms themselves could be taken straight from Marrakesh - beautifully decorated and immaculately cleaned.

This place is an oasis of luxury in the desert. However, what takes it to the next level is the service. The two co-owners treated us like royalty at all times. From serving free Morrocotinis (their custom cocktail - sake based, with vermouth, orange juice and lemon seltzer) in the evening, to accomodating any little wish you have, they made you feel like a king.

This is no corporate hotel chain - the personal touch really does enhance your stay. Rooms vary from $169 to $229 which isn't exactly cheap, but the treatment you receive makes it well worth the money.

Summary: Worth taking a detour off the LA-Vegas road, this is by far the best hotel I've stayed in
