Excalibur Hotel and Casino (USA)
Advantages: Dining, in-house entertainment, excellent and very helpful staff
Disadvantages: location, disabled bathroom was pretty crappy
I stayed at the EXCALIBUR Hotel & Casino in December 2007, so some things may have altered slightly.
We stayed in one of the basic rooms with wheelchair access.
There was the main room with 2 double beds, a dresser, table with 2 chairs and a large TV with cable. There was also a large wardrobe, with space for 3 people's shoes and clothes, in addition to the built in safe. There was also enough room to put away the suitcases.
The bothroom was large with good lighting, a hairdyer, plenty of towels and sturdy railing around the toilet. A word of warning for disabled guests; our roll in shower was raised from the floor. It also had narrow shower doors, meaning it wasn't really suitable at all. I managed but it was way more of a struggle then it should have to be. If you need disabled faculities I'd advise clariying the access with your travel agent before booking.
I didn't venture into the actual casino, so my impressions are from walking through it to my room. The actual pit floor is large, with many tables set up for individual games of poker, roulette and similar. They have hundreds of slot machines a bit to the side. These are arranged in order by size of pay-outs. The machines with large payouts use special cards purchased on site, not money.
On the lower ground there is a childrens 'casino'. There is a large selection of arcade games, as well as a 3D SpongeBob Squarepants ride.
Excalibur boasts 4 shows: The Tournament Of Kings dinner show, Thunder From Downunder (male strippers :)), Comic Louie Anderson and a one-man comedic show Defending The Caveman.
You can also enjoy DJ's and/or live bands at the weekend [and selected weeknights] in the Octane Lounge (ages 21 and over).
There are a varity of shops on-site, selling gifts, toys and clothing. There is a swimming pool ( it was on the 4th floor, but I beleave they have a outdoor one), access to 3 golf courses and a spa with a hair salon.
There 5 restaurants to choose from: The Steakhouse at Camelot, the Sherwood Forest Cafe (very reasonable prices), Baja Fresh (Mexican grill), Dick's Last Resort (so much fun. The staff give you attitude, the food has witty names and they have a live band) and the infamous Roundtable Buffet (you pay at the door, then that's it. Eat as much as you want, have as many refills as you can manage).
Excalibur also has a food court with a Starbucks, Auntie Anne's Pretzels, Krisby Kreme Doughnuts, Coldstone Creamery (yummy ice creams), McDonalds, Quizno's (hot and cold sandwiches) and Manchu WOK.
The Excalibur is the 2nd to last hotel on the southern end of the strip.
This is ideal for those wanting a quieter stay as the traffic noise is much quieter - in fact most nights I didn't notice any noise at all.
However, if you want to shop and/or experience the nightlife I'd reccomend booking a more central hotel (like Treasure Island), otherwise you're in for a lot of walking or taxi fares (which can be pricey during peak times as traffic is heavy).
For a family holiday I'd fully recommend Excalibur; There really is plenty for everyone here, I think it was developed with families in mind.
I'd also recommend it for those who want something a little quieter and just want to take advantage of the fantastic entertainment and dining on-site and in the immediate hotels [Luxor, MGM Grand and New York New York].
However, for the younger childless crowd I'd advise finding something more central to the action.
Summary: two thumbs up for families, one thumb for everyone else
