Last weekend was the start of the Salzburg festival which resulted in us having trouble finding accommodation. All the cheap places in our guide book were full, so we did what anyone in our situation would have done - begged a native to use their power to get us a room somewhere. This is how we ended up where we did and what follows is the story of why you should consider staying there too even though it’s not that well known. We stayed in what can only be described as a typically Austrian Gasthaus. It was an overly large house with 8 guest rooms spread over 2 floors. The family lived on the top floor, far enough away from the guests to give them privacy, but near enough for them to solve any problems they might have. Our room lovely and large – it had a double bed, 2 full sized wardrobes (though being the scruffy teenagers we are, we avoided them, choosing instead to leave our clothes in our bags), a table with two chairs, bedside tables at either side and a sink. Although none of the rooms are en suite, there are 2 toilets and a shower on each floor (so for up to 4 rooms to share depending on occupancy). The rooms were spotlessly clean and the bathroom really sparkled. The last hotel I stayed in, in Bratislava, had all rooms en suite but their bathrooms were much worse than this. Also, after having had nearly 8 weeks of European style showers, you cannot imagine what a relief it was to have a proper shower at last – complete with holder on the wall and sliding doors. We paid 1000 Ös for the 2 of us for 2 nights (roughly 50 GBP in total) which we found quite reasonable. The price included breakfast which was : A hot drink of your choice Orange Juice Fresh rolls and Bread Butter and Jam Cheese and Ham Yoghurt or Cake depending on the day – who knows, if we’d stayed another day we might have got something else The view was wonderful – mo
untains in one direction, town in the other, and the place had a garden although we didn’t sit in there. Each room gets a key to let them into the building as well as their room, so you can come and go as you please. The house itself is in the 2nd district, a mere 20 mins from the centre. To get there from the train station, take bus num 1 or 2 to Moostrasse, and then number 15 or 60 for about 10 mins until the bus turns off the main road. Walk back onto the main road and head in the direction away from the town for about 3 or 4 mins and you’re there. Any problems? Well, the TV’s reception was a bit iffy. The 1000 Acres in the film of the same name drifted in an out as we watched. There was only one channel tuned to our set (Örf 1) but then with so much to do in the city, who wants to watch TV all day? Boring Facty Details Now : Address is : Moostrasse 68D A5020 Salzburg Telephone 06 62 824978

- 30/07/01 Well the ones I've encountered don't seem to believe in shower curtains or wall holders and I know I can't be the only one who finds washing hair in such setups a pain. Louise agrees, don't you dear? |
