Advantages: cheap, great location, cheap...and great location, You share rooms with really interesting people

Disadvantages: You share rooms with really interesting people

And the place is really good. It's called the Gershwin Hotel.

This year (2001 )I went to New York and stayed at the Gershwin Hotel...this is a hostel with a difference. First of all it's IN a hotel, so you go in the entrance with everyone else and enjoy the band playing jazz in the foyer, the art gallery, the bar, the service, the art on everywall, on every floor. But you also pay very low rent for your room, I was paying about £25 dollars a night.

So what is the catch? Well, on one floor, rether than there being 8 rooms, there are just two, and they have been knocked into dorms. the rooms are clean, although they are not in the highest state of repair, and you share with others. This is actually a bonus as you will meet some really quite exceptional and intersting people. I had travelled on my own and met loads of people (including one permanent friend) through the people i was staying with...and we all went out at night. It's one of the best holidays I have ever had.

Other bonuses include the location...it's between 5th Street and Madison avenue (just around the corner from The Empire State Building). The breakfast is extra, and I would recommend venturing out early to sample the other culinary delights that Manhattan has to offer.

There are various things actually going on in the hotel as well to keep you entertained. We had comedy nights, and bands played in the function room, which was another good way of meeting people.

Just one word of advice for when you are in NY, remember to tip wherever you go (this does prove to be expensive after a while) and enjoy levels of service this country can only dream about.

I would definately go again, and it's a great way (and cheap way) to see New York...and the bar in the gershwin has a happy hour!!

I stayed at the Gershwin last week as accomodation for a college trip. Our room was falling to pieces with bolts falling out, I had stained sheets, there was hair clogging up the plug hole and some rooms even had cockroaches. Cheap...but definitely not the Plaza.
