Advantages: Good Location and Food, Sea Views
Disadvantages: A Little Out Of The Centre, Slow Service
Gloria! Gloria!
===========
We often go to Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria for a pre Christmas holiday as the weather is good and there's a lot of bars and restaurants. We usually go self catering but having seen the Gloria Palace and thought it looked nice we checked it out and found that half board cost hardly anything more than a decent Self Catering apartment.
The location of the hotel is excellent, it is right on the headland just past the harbour. There is a lift right down to the promenade where it's a five minute walk to the beach. It closes at midnight so make sure you're back from the centre if you don't want to turn into a pumpkin, or at least have to walk all the way around as we did once.
Our room, like almost all of the rooms had a direct sea view which was great. It was very large with a large bathroom with two basins. The room also had a small fridge. Some of the furniture in the room could do with replacing but on the whole good. It was kept clean well by the maids. At night it's so dark that you can watch the shooting stars from the balcony.
There are two pools, both of then are quite shallow all the way around and look out onto the sea. As we were half board we spent more time by the beach, Puerto Rico and Amadores beaches are within easy walking distance. We prefer Puerto Rico beach as Amodores isn't real sand and is quite gravely.
The food in the hotel I found to be very good. Breakfast was very nice with surprisingly good bacon for a change. The only strange thing is that you only get a small plate. This is no problem as you can go up as often as you like. I enjoyed breakfast. I even found some HP sauce, lovely. My only criticism is that the staff are slow at clearing the tables so it can take a while to find a clean one or for them to clear the one you sit at. Once we did it ourselves as we got fed up waiting.
Evening meal is a bit of a free for all table wise, sometimes a waiter will sort a table out for you when you go in but most of the time it's every man for himself. I found the food to be very good, I had some lovely steaks and there was enough variety for everyone. The food was always hot and plentiful.
We didn't drink much in the hotel at night but when we did we found the service in the bar to be quite poor. If a waiter takes your order you might get it by bed time, it was fine if you go to the bar yourself. We went into Puerto Rico centre most nights.
The hotel entertainment is the usual fare, nothing to write home about. There was a reasonably good birds of prey show, but I could take it or leave it. Let's face it the entertainment in most hotels is pretty average.
If you want to go into the main centre it is in walking distance or a taxi costs about three and a half Euros. What a shame our exchange rate is so bad at the moment.
Summing up I would go back to the Gloria Palace if the price was right, most likely as Half Board again as this seems to be the best value. The positives certainly outweigh the negatives.
Recommended.
