I stayed in the Gran Hotel Don Juan in Lloret de Mar for 3nights from 14th March until 17th March as part of a study visit trip with my college class. I have previously reviewed the airport we flew into and the resort itself and have had dooyoo approve my suggestion for this hotel. I will tell you about the main details of the hotel and then voice my opinion..are you sitting comfortably?
The Gran Hotel Don Juan is situated on a hill approx 200ml from Lloret beach. Nearby are 2 supermarkets, an electrical shop, a restaurant with mini golf and bowling, a few bars/cafes and various souvenir shops. It is located slightly away from the main area of shops and you have various options of getting to the shops (personally I recommend the well lit front way, straight down a hill and not the side streets).
The hotel has 871 bedrooms spread over 5 floors. There is private car parking underneath the hotel for 200 cars. Outside the hotel there are various vending machines and seats. On entering the hotel, you are greeted with a spacious layout which is clean and well managed. The reception area is welcoming and spacious. Facilities in the hotel include :
Meeting facilities - we had no need for these so did not enquire
Currency exchange - didn't locate this?
Games room - pool (2euros), air hockey (2euros) various driving machines (1euro)
Indoor Pool - our tutor was under strict instructions not to allow us in the pools though we did pass by. The indoor pool is up a few stairs around the corner from reception and is a good size
Tennis courts - hmmm maybe we missed these?
Outdoor pool - be very careful..deepest end is 2.5m and it is very cold in March! There is a pool bar though this was not open when we were there. The pool area is very big and there are plenty of sunbeds and tables and chairs though I can imagine these would be snapped up quick in high season!
Childrens club - this was not available when we were there :(
Water activities - offered in high season only
Hair salon - this never seemed to be open when we were there though the prices seemed reasonable at 11euros for a ladies cut
Shop - selling various souvenirs, toiletries, sweets and juice. Very lovely lady who ran the shop though very stuff and expensive
Bar - at the front of the hotel there is a public bar offering various alcohol drinks and football on the tv
Dancing area - the hotel is known for its ballroom dancing. There is a huge dancing area near the back of the hotel alongside seats and another bar which also serves snacks and cakes.
Restaurant - the restaurant serves buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner based on board basis. There is various displays of food and they are dotted around the large dining room. More on this later!
Toilets - several toilets located around the ground floor of the hotel.
Rooms can take up to 4 people. You are given a key card along with your room key which doubles up as an electricity key and you won't have any electricity if your key is not in the slot. Behind the door is a wardrobe with 6 coathangers, shelving space and a safe (pay if you require at reception). The bathroom has a bath with shower, sink area with space for toiletries and a mirror, a toilet, a beadie and a bin aswell as towels. The room has 2 seats, a desk with large mirror above and beds. The bedding is basic and like most Spanish hotels, everything is matching. Our beds has an orange throw and a white sheet. The double curtains were also matching. Every room in the hotel has a balcony which is a slide door with a click lock which you click into place to lock. Most balconies have at least one chair. Balconies can look out onto the pool or in our case, the horrible green fans and generators that keep the hotel running! The rooms also have a phone for which you can request a wake up call and a tv. The rooms were very basic in decorating, white wash walls and could be really doing with an overhaul.
You can opt for room only, bed and breakfast, half board or all inclusive.
The reception staff (2 on duty) wear burgandy suit jackets and name tags. They are very pleasant and always there to help with any issues. There is always at least 1 member of security on however I am aware that this is increased during the high season. We did not see the maids during our trip however we did have to complain that we didn't receive fresh towels or toilet roll on the second day. This was rectified quickly. The restaurant staff looked like they could not be bothered working which is understandable!
As we went as part of a college group, we were not given details of the breakdown of the costs however I am led to believe it was cheap!
Breakfast consisted of croissants, rolls, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, boiled eggs, bacon, hash browns etc but this varied from day to day. Fresh fruit juice is available free of charge.
We were half board so lunch was not included.
Dinner varied but included salad items, fish, veal or lamb, pasta and icecream and unusual puddings.
Note that there is no where to buy fizzy juice for dinner but you are given a small bottle of still water.
So I read the reviews before we went to this hotel and was dreading it..I was right to! I will specify the good points first before getting down to the nitty gritty!
Games room - as me and my 2 friends were not very big drinkers, we spent alot of time in the games room, well I say room but its open plan so games area if you will! We played plenty of pool..still annoyed though as I didn't manage to win a single game..I think it had something to do with me bouncing the ball of the table on a regular basis!
Shop - the little shop sold some lovely little souvenirs and was ideal on our last day for little bits and pieces to spend the rest of our money on.
Internet - yes I had to check my emails and there was about 7 or 8 intergrated computers for use. It was 50c for 5mins, 1euro for 10mins and 2euro for 20mins which isn't too bad.
Croissants - the croissants were lovely with jam!
Shower - I don't have a shower at home so it was lovely having one in the hotel, it wasn't overly powerful but enough for a relaxing wash!
Beds - oh my..the beds were awful! We had 3 of us in our room and the first time I sat on the bed, I thought I was going to go through it. The legs were bending and they just weren't safe! One of the skinnier girls in our class sat on hers and went right through it within 10mins of getting in the room.
Rooms - far too small, the girls next door had 2 in their room which seemed spacious enough but we had 3 beds and you couldn't swing a cat in our room. As a result of the poor positioning of the beds, my friend broke her toe after stubbing it!
Balcony - besides the awful view and not having a chair, the balconies were tiny and the tiles were coming away at the door which is dangerous!
Maid service - with any other Spanish hotel I have stayed at, maids come round in the morning, makes the beds, empty the bins and put fresh towels/toilet rolls etc in the bathroom. Well this happened the first day but not the second and I ended up complaining at 8pm as we had no clean towels and there were 3 of us but they were brought up very quickly.
Ballroom dancing - yes the hotels speciallity was on til 5am on the Sunday night..we could hear the music on the 1st floor and struggled to get to sleep.
The food - the reviews were very right when they said the food was bad. Arriving at 7pm on the 1st night we were tired and went to the restaurant. (Forgot to mention breakfast 8am-10am and dinner 7pm - 9pm). The restaurant is so outdated and dingy but clean. The food is presented well however the choice was ridiculous. From what I can remember from the 1st night, there was a choice of some kind of fish, veal, cold pizza, plain pasta and salads and fruit and icecream for dessert. We went for pasta and pizza and it was vile..not properly cooked and all freezing. Needless to say, we were thankful for a nearby McDonalds as we didn't have dinner in the hotel again. The main thing that annoyed me is that I could have ate chips but they didn't even do them!
And finally my main issue - the people! I am not sure if you are aware but the Spanish government run a scheme for over 65s where they can register and go on holiday to another part of Spain..well the Gran Hotel Don Juan was their chosen destination. The reviews were certainly spot on when they mentioned that out of season, the hotel caters for mature Spanish people. Everywhere we turned, Spanish woman old enough to be my granny, we glowering at us which made us feel so uncomfortable. We passed through the main hall where the ball room dancing was taking place and the smell of just generally old people smell if that makes sense nearly knocked me off my feet..it was awful.
Personally I think the hotel was a swingers hotel for over 65s based on how some of the older generation were dressed and the leering men! The hotel is clean though the restaurant and rooms could be doing with a major overhaul and to get them up to the standards of the reception area.
Summing it up I will never go back to this hotel or the resort for that matter.
