Having researched this hotel before booking online, it surpassed all our expectations. Located just on the outskirts of central Barcelona, it is well positioned for easy access to two metro stations and a mainline station. It is set back from the main road so it is quiet and the double glazing ensures that the rooms are noise free from outside traffic. The building is a multi storey with a distinctive white painted exterior. Located just to the right of the main entrance is a supermarket and to the left is a small parade of shops, selling a variety of useful items. In the vicinity of the hotel there are numerous shops including shops, restaurants, cafes and general stores. We booked our hotel visit using www.booking.com.
On entering the hotel, we received a warm welcome from the staff who were always polite, efficient and very helpful. We were offered a welcome drink of champagne and small peanuts/savoury biscuits. Our booking was very quickly and efficiently checked and our rooms allocated without delay. Directions to our room were clear and we had the option of taking either one of the two lifts or stairs to our second floor rooms. The corridors leading to our rooms were well lit, and carpeted. Each room was clearly numbered, with entrance via a swipe card.
Reception and other guest areas
The lounge which is situated the main entrance and opens out into the smokers area via a sliding door, is bright and modern with a selection of round glass coffee tables, and orange coloured tub chairs. The chairs are comfortable. These are used by guests whilst having a drink or watching television. The television was a flat screen television. The bar area which is usually operated by one of the members of staff has a wide selection of drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic, and also where snack foods can be ordered. In the main reception area there is always background music being played which added to the ambience without being loud or intrusive. The lounge area is well lit, but with soft lighting, which makes it comfortable and relaxing.
The lifts are very efficient and serve all the floors, and as with the rest of the hotel, they are spotlessly clean. The hotel also had a luggage trolley for staff to help move luggage for guests via the lift.
The Bedroom and bath/shower room
On entering the room, the bathroom area was noted to be, well presented, absolutely clean with numerous array of complimentary toiletries, which included disposable toothbrushes, sewing kit, shoe shine sponge and a shower cap. We also had shower gels soap and body lotion. The bathroom was quite spacious, well lit and extremely clean.
The bathroom included a non slip bath base, a shower over the bath and Bidet. The temperature of the water was easy to control, although when showering the water from the bath tap still flowed a bit. There was a shaving mirror and a hairdryer provided. The towels were replaced daily if required and the daily cleaning of the room and bathroom was extremely thorough.
The storage of clothes was more than adequate as the mirror wardrobe consisted of four integral drawers, a safe and ample hanging space for clothing. Lighting was plentiful with a number of options for the type of lighting to choose from, including full lighting, spot lighting and specific reading light as part of the bedside cabinets. There was a writing desk with storage space and a television which was large screen, with a remote control, an arm chair, coffee table and foot stool were also available. Tea/coffee making facilities could be provided for an additional 2 Euros a day, which is a useful option for an early morning cup of tea/an alternative to room service. There was a safe, drawers and a wardrobe in the room, which were quite large as well. The wardrobe also had a spare blanket.
The bedroom could be ventilated, opening the windows, or by using the appropriate setting on the heating system. All in all, the room was certainly pleasant and comfortable, which meets most people's requirements for any length of stay. Room service was available as was a laundry service. The bar in the reception area was also available for alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks. At times, there was a self service for guests to use.
The bed was king sized, the mattress was quite firm, the bed linen was absolutely spotless and there was a selection of pillows and cushions. The pillows varied in thickness and firmness. The bed was very comfortable and the mattresses were quite thick and well supportive with a firm bed frame platform. As the bed was not a divan bed, this would make the bed cooler to sleep in, in hot weather. This would not be a problem as there was also air conditioning in the room.
The decor of the room was well co-ordinated, with the curtains and the bed linen to provide an inviting and well presented room. The bedroom floor was wooden, part of the rooms were painted white and the rest in wall paper with decorative coving.
The room service menu a wide range of food and drinks such as grilled chicken costing 11 euros and 50 cents, and wine ranging in price from 8 euros a bottle up to around 50 Euros for a bottle of Moet Chandon champagne.
The desk in the bedroom which had a flat screen television had a range of Spanish television channels which also had access to BBC world news and a few other channels. The rooms were also Wi-fi enabled, although during our stay we did not use it. The bedroom also contained complimentary magazines which were in Spanish, along with free chewing gum.
We could not hear noise from other guests, other than during occasional times when guests were moving furniture around. The room was quiet and peaceful.
Furthermore, there was a mini bar in our bedroom, stocked with mineral water, cola drinks, soft drinks as well as a selection of alcoholic drinks, including beer, whisky, wine, rum and vodka. The rates of the mini bar was quite reasonable for a hotel costing between 2 and 5 Euros for each product.
Value For Money
Our experience at staying at this hotel, represented excellent value for money. The quality of the room and the hotels location and the exceptional service provided by the staff as well as the comprehensive choice of breakfast foods, make this hotel one to be revisited. We paid 65 Euros a night with continental breakfast, although we had a full range of breakfast to feast upon. Both during and after our stay, our reflections are that this was excellent value for money. We would have no hesitation to revisit the H10 Itaca Hotel in Barcelona as it is splendidly well managed, well organised, clean and has a nice breakfast as well.
Standard of Service
This was excellent, they were always smiling, always polite, and made every effort to ensure that our stay was pleasant, and that our needs were met. All the staff, from reception to catering and housekeeping that we came across was helpful, friendly and efficient. All members of staff wore their uniforms with pride; they were well groomed and professional. They all seemed to work as a team and took their responsibilities very seriously. They were never observed to be standing idle, as they were always seen doing something. Some of the reception staff spoke English, and were able to provide us with clear information with directions, places of interest to visit and also advised us regarding safety. As the cleaning of the room was carried out on a daily basis, towels were refreshed, bins emptied, and new sheets were put on the beds. Fresh supplies of toiletries were also provided. The room was dust free, the bath screen was smear free, and all the mirrors were gleaming. There was nothing that you could fault the hotel as there were no cobwebs, dust or anything negative.
Quality of Food and Drink
The breakfast was served at 07:00 - 10:30. We did not have dinner which was a shame as it would likely have been nice. The restaurant where breakfast and dinner was served was situated on the first floor. Also the dining/breakfast area had a dividing wall that was opened up to facilitate increase covers. The breakfast was very comprehensive and would have appealed to most peoples tastes. From the choice of at least five different fruit juices, a vast selection of pastries and cakes, and cooked meals, there was no reason for any guest to go hungry. Guests could select from around ten different types of teas including herbal infusions, soya milk, and a selection of coffees from a vending machine. In addition to this coffee making machine, there was an espresso coffee making machine. Should any guest want an early morning tipple, there was the option of sparkling wine/champagne. There was also water. Deciding what to have for breakfast, might take some guests a bit of time because the variety of food available. There was a choice of at least three different types of cold meat e.g. ham, Parma ham, three or four different types of cheese, it was not Feta cheese, it was curd cheese, boiled eggs, olives, a variety of salad food such as tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce. They even had sweet corn kernels which we found a bit bizarre for breakfast. Following on, there was a choice of scrambled eggs, bacon, mini sausages and mushrooms. The choice of fruit included, fresh pineapple, tinned pineapple, tinned apricots, but fresh kiwi, bananas, apples, oranges and redcurrants. In addition to the fruit there was a variety of at least three yogurts. The selection of cakes and pastries, included donuts, croissants, muffins, madelin sponge cakes, cheese cake (blackcurrant), almond tart and orange tart, some traditional Spanish long strips of pastry.
In conclusion of the breakfast food and drink, it would definitely set you up for the day, and is varied and excellent range of choice.
The entire hotel was clean throughout. The hotel looked well maintained, although there were small signs of wear and tear against the skirting boards as well as in the backing of the wardrobes. The communal areas such as the reception, and lounge and the dining rooms were always well presented, clean and tidy. The gym area was fully equipped with a good selection of exercise equipment. The outside of the hotel was immaculate and there was no litter to be seen, and the hotel had great curb appeal. On the landings, in between stairs there were large metal plant holders with cacti. This set off the stairs very well in a striking manner. Regarding the cleanliness in specific terms, there were no marks on the stairs, tea or coffee spills, no dirt marks. This level of cleanliness was reflected throughout the hotel.
Leading from the lounge area, there was an enclosed outdoor area for smokers. The floor area for smokers consisted of wooden decking, and large umbrellas had been placed to provide cover. The furniture was dark woven ratten style with light coloured cushions, and numerous tables were also scattered to enable guests to have drinks and snacks whilst outside. The smoker's area was also well lit.
Secondly there were free Wi-Fi and adsl facilities in this hotel.
This hotel is disabled guest friendly. There is a customer guest lift which is fine. I am not sure if there are specific disabled facilities, although the ramp entrance to the reception area was easy and simple to navigate.
If you travel to Barcelona this hotel is highly recommended. It really is well worth paying the money at the H10 Itaca Hotel in Barcelona.
Other notes from the previous review on the particular hotel is that my own findings is that this hotel is definitely a 4 star hotel and that guests had been happy with their accomodation. This is slightly contradictory in comparison with a shorter review written over 2 years ago by another reviewer.
