... and comfortable car and our driver appeared to have less reckless driving tendencies than some others on the roads. The hacienda seemed to be a lot more than the 4km it claimed out of town and is on the Pan American highway but quite far set back so there was not even remotely any traffic noise and indeed the grounds are large and proved to be extremely peaceful. Perusing my Ecuador guidebook to find somewhere interesting to stay for a few days after my Galapagos Islands cruise, I stumbled across a section on haciendas. I was quite intrigued as I had only heard of the Hacienda nightclub in my home city of Manchester. But it turns out that in Ecuador a hacienda is an old fashioned, usually two or three hundred year old, stately country home and hacienda means “property” in Spanish. Hacienda Pinsaqui is on the outskirts of a town called Otovalo, which itself is 90km north of Quito, Ecuador’s capital city.
