Hampton by Hilton, Guyaquil - Downtown
W spent only one night in this hotel on our way from the Galapagos islands through to Santiago in Chile. We were joined by another couple from our Galapagos cruise so it was quite nice as we spent the evening together wandering around Guayaquil before we had our dinner in the hotel and said our goodbyes.
Firstly it was a quick and easy drive from the airport, around ten minutes which was very convenient and secondly the hotel was very central. We were able to walk and explore the river front walk which was only a couple of blocks away. This is known as the Malecon and is a promenade or boardwalk covering a two-mile distance alongside the Guayas River.
When we arrived we were welcomed quickly by the reception staff, we filled in the necessary forms and handed in a passport to be photocopied and then handed our key cards. A porter helped us up to our room with the cases and then showed us around the room before leaving with his tip.
The reception area was large and sort of led into the bar area behind the lifts. There was plenty of comfortable seating where you could meet friends or sit and share a drink or two and have a chat. It was comfortable and very nicely decorated with muted colours and huge floral displays. One wall was full of framed awards given to the hotel to impress all visitors.
The room was very nice with a good sized bed and four large comfortable pillows. The room was not huge but was a lot bigger than many. The bed looked so comfortable and luxurious after our rather hard cramped bed on the ship. The room was decorated in muted colours with local paintings on the walls. The carpet was plain and the furniture light coloured wood. On either side of the bed was a bedside table with a decent light for reading. While the head board was soft and comfortable for sitting up in bed and reading or working on the laptop. The bed was REALLY comfortable and we sort of melted into it when we finally got into bed and sleep like a couple of babies for the few hours we had there.
The large flatscreen TV was not very much used by us and there was enough storage space for clothes as well as a coded safe but as we were only here overnight we didn't unpack or indeed use the safe once we got back from our dinner everything was ready for us to get up and go at 5.30am.
The bathroom was again, not huge but had a bath and shower over it, toilet and basin. I couldn't wait to get in the bath for a good soak having had ten days with a tiny shower on the ship. The water was lovely and hot we had nice toiletries left for us and I had a really nice long soak. The towels were good, soft and white thick towels and we had plenty for the two of us.
There was free wifi which I managed to make use of for a few hours between our early dinner and going to sleep in our lovely comfortable king sized bed.
We had dinner with our fellow Galapagos travellers, in the restaurant, Kafe Boulevard in the hotel as we looked around for other places and nothing took our fancy. My husband and I chose Ecuadorian dishes as we were not going to be able to enjoy them again for some time. We had cerviche to start with then I had a fish meal and my husband went for some red meat. Everything we had was well prepared and tasty. The service was little slow to begin with but once he grasped the idea that we actually wanted to eat things did speed up. Considering the place was pretty near empty when we first went in as we were eating rather earlier than usual because of our early start the next day we did think they could have been a little speedier in taking our order.
The restaurant was actually quite large and nicely decorated, looking smart and welcoming to diners. We sat at a table near the window with a view down to the city below. I am not sure how they cope when the place is full but luckily we were eating when it was quiet. Prices were reasonable and I think our meal with a drink each and two courses each came to about £60 which we felt was pretty good value .
Our breakfast was included in the cost of our stay but sadly we left too early to enjoy that. They did however bag us up a picnic breakfast with fruit, muffin, bottle of water and something else that escapes me now. I gave them one bottle of water back straight away as we had two already and knew we couldn't take them through security and I hate waste.
We checked out paying our bill for the meal and were wished a safe journey and that was the end of our few hours in this very pleasant hotel. I am not sure what we paid for the night's stay as we booked the lot as a specially created package for us through Llama travel.
I would say that disabilities re mobility would be coped with fine as there were two speedy lifts and the room was big enough as well as the bathroom door being large enough to allow wheel chair access. Service animals are allowed but no pets. They allow smoking on one floor but thankfully we wee nowhere near that one. There is parking if you come with a car and a fitness centre which I admit we didn't even bother looking for.
I would certainly recommend this hotel for a stay in Gauyaquil as it is clean, smart and central with great food and lovely helpful friendly staff. The bed was really comfortable too which is not always the case. This hotel was considerably better than the Hilton we stayed in a few days ago in Newport in South Wales so just because it is a certain brand does not guarantee quality.
