Hilton Garden Inn Times Square (New York, USA)
Advantages: Location, large room with great amenities and nice bed
Disadvantages: Can be noisy if on the lower floors at the front of the building
Location, Location, Location the New York Garden Inn on Times Square delivered. Situated on 790 Eighth Street, in the heart of midtown it was ideal and cost reasonable considering its location. The website advertises rooms in the region of $200 a night (I think I got the room for nearer $150 through Expedia) which may seem a lot now but when you could get about $2 to a £1 it was effectively £75 for a king size room in the centre of Manhatton.
I booked The Hilton via Expedia based on location and reviews. Its an easy 3-5 minute walk to Times Square, the Theatre District. And within walking distance to many other attractions including Central Park, National History Museum and Rockefeller to name a few. It's also easy enough to walk to the waterfront to catch one of the boat tours round the island and the bus tours are just a few blocks away. Getting to the Hotel is not hard either; I got the bus from Newark and then walked from the bus station to the Hotel which took less than 10mins. You do see quite a few people doing the same pushing suitcases to and from Hotels theyve stayed at.
The Hotel itself is on a main street and the rooms at the front if on the lower levels can be a bit noisy, I had a room on the middle floors and whilst it wasn't silent it didn't keep me awake. A fire station is located on the same street not to far down and they can be noisy but its part of the fun of being in a city that never sleeps. The view from the room is nothing amazing and so if your looking to get a hotel you can sit a daze out at great views from then this is not for you - but why would you do that anyway, its far better to get out there and view the sights.
I booked the room on a room only basis, a restaurant is attached and rpices are ok but not that cheap for New York, but directly opposite the hotel is a well priced Diner that served a huge variety of food- and this is ideal for breakfast in the morning, was really cheap as well and food was served fast.
As for the room well I was very impressed, it looked brand new and freshly renovated and had lots of amenities included such as fridge, microwave, coffee maker, safe, and 26in flat screen TV - not that you want to spend much time in the room watching it. But after a long day sightseeing it was nice to chill out for an hour or two before going out again at night, was nice also to have the option to get drinks in the room as some hotels dont even have a kettle. Was a really good size room with lounge area with two big comfy chairs and table and a separate desk area, again a number of reviews on other hotels said they had really small rooms, so best to look about (trip adviser is normally good for giving you an idea of what a place is like).
Best of all was the bed which was a Hilton Sleep system bed and has to be the most comfortable bed I have ever slept on; if they sold them over here I would buy one in a flash, as I woke up feeling refreshed from all the walking about. The bathroom is typical of most Hilton Hotel bathrooms and had a shower over bath and was again spotless.
The hotel reception area has a small seating area with a small shop which sells some snacks and drinks etc. But if you needed more then a couple of minutes walk up the street and you will find a supermarket. I couldn't have picked a better located hotel for convenience. Reception staff all seemed very friendly and I had no delays or problems checking in or during my stay.
Most of the entertainment surrounds Times sq and so it was great to have a hotel close. I could write loads on the different sites and places but this review is about the hotel. If your a hilton member as well you do get points from the Garden Inn hotels, although check before hand as you may have to booke the hotel through Hilton to qualify.
Summary: Its all about location and this place has it for a good price.
