Advantages: comfortable, good food, courteous staff

Disadvantages: not a lot to do,

I recently stayed at the Hilton Hotel in Luxembourg for three nights as a weekend break.

This hotel has only recently been taken over by the Hilton chain. It was previously known as the Hotel Inter-Continental, which had built up a very good reputation for business clients in the area.

Overall, I found the hotel comfortable, clean and spacious, and the staff friendly and courteous.

ROOMS

My room was decently sized, with very comfy twin beds and all the extras you'd expect with a five star hotel. The bathroom was nicely decorated with both a bath and shower. Unfortunately, I developed an allergy to the pillows in my room, which were stuffed with goose feathers, but the staff changed them for me immediately so I didn't suffer for long!

The rooms were cleaned every day at the same time (about 11.00am) and fresh towels laid out.

FOOD

We had a buffet breakfast each morning, which offered a good selection of fruit, yoghurt, bread, pastries, fried food, cold meats and cheese. On the first morning, there weren't many people staying in the hotel, so there was plenty of everything and the waiters/waitresses had time to top up things that ran out. On the second day, the hotel was packed, and most of the pastries I like had all gone when we came down to breakfast, which was disappointing - I'd advise getting down to breakfast as early as you can when the hotel's busy.

We ordered room service each night. The service was prompt and the food was delicious. There was an extensive wine menu, and you could order up other drinks from the bar if you felt like it.

BAR

The 'Bar La Veranda' was relaxing and comfortable with a gorgeous view over the valley. The drinks were pricey - about £8 for a glass of champage and £3.50 for a small glass of dry white wine. There was a good selection of cocktails and drinks were served with a small bowl of snacks, which was a nic
e touch.

ENTERTAINMENT

As evening entertainment the hotel guide promised 'theme nights' and karaoke from Monday to Saturday, but because it was so late in the season, all we got was a bloke playing the piano and attempting to sing - and he wasn't very good. As the hotel is quite a way away from Luxembourg town centre and the weather was apalling, we stuck to a few drinks in the bar each night and then bed.

During the day, there's a pool, which was empty for most of the time we were there, and a sauna and gym. You can also pay extras for beauty treatments and massage. I had a full body massage which cost about £30 and was very relaxing. A free shuttle bus takes you down into Luxembourg town centre and picks you up at designated times.

I'd recommend the hotel to people on business trips to Luxembourg, it's comfortable and the food is of a good standard. I don't think I'd go back to Luxembourg for a weekend break, as although it's very pretty with some stunning views and nice shops, there isn't a great deal to do there, especially out of season.

Well, next time I find myself in Luxembourg I will try it - all I have to do now is find someone to treat me to a long weekend there!
