When I got my hotel reservation for a business trip this week I was very surprised to see that it was for the Hilton in Mainz near Frankfurt. I have visited the Hilton in Swansea for conferences etc on a number of occasions and not been that impressed but really looked forward to this and thought it would change my perception. The flight into Frankfurt was rather quiet and I was looking forward to a warm bath before going out on a business meal that evening. The taxi pulled up to the front of the Hilton, which was just like the film. The bellboy ran out and took my luggage from the boot and guided me into a massive reception area with marble floors plush leather seats and big pot plants everywhere. I had to fill in a number of forms but the staff was very smartly dressed and very polite. I gazed around me and could see that on the next floor was a restaurant that overlooked the vast reception area. Everything was very clean and bright which you would expect from a modern day hotel. It was then off to the room to wash and change. No keys the door was opened and closed via a credit card which took a little bit of getting used to and we had quite a job opening my Japanese colleagues door. Then the disappointment began, a very drab room with a single bed and portable TV it could have been anywhere. There was a writing table which had a very comfortable chair parked against it and a mini bar in the corner that charged extortionate prices. The wardrobe space was quite small and I was glad I was only staying one night. The bathroom was no different to any other hotel bathroom all white tiles with a bath come shower. The bath water was very hot and they did provide shampoo etc but not quite what I expected. I dinned out that evening so breakfast was the only meal I ate in the hotel. It was a buffet affair with big bowls of fruit and flowers everywhere to add a bit of colour. The food was very tasty and I enjoyed you had a choice
of continental or American style breakfast and the normal cereals etc, not a lot that can be done wrong I guess. For £120 a night I was very disappointed what started off as somewhere that would change my perception regards the Hilton has only heightened it more to being overpriced and living off a name that may at one time been deserved.

- 11/03/01 Many Hiltons are overpriced, the name doesn't have the same status any more. |
