      Very helpful

A nice clean hotel, good breakfasts but too far from restaurants so you had to get anywhere by car

      Holiday Inn Express Elkhart North
We booked this hotel through loyalty points so we had two free nights B&B. We chose this one because it was pretty close to Shipshewana and also drivable distance from Chicago O'Hare where we were flying from when we left the USA this time. When you use your Priority points each hotel charges different point values and we got two nights here where in other hotels in the same chain we would have only got one night.

This is a chain hotel, one of the Holiday Inn Express hotels which we have found to be of a pretty good standard wherever we have been. This was no exception. We were welcomed and given our key card for our room. The lady at the check in desk explained where we would find breakfast in the morning and what time it was available. She also pointed out the little gym and the pool. After this she explained where we could park the car for easiest access to our room.

As you enter the hotel there is a sitting area with comfortable chairs where you could meet friends or sit and read if you chose. The breakfast area is sort of divided from this main area by a curved wall so that it made it more of a separate room than in some other hotels. I liked the fact that this was sort of separated off but was still easy to find and had a reasonable number of tables too. The reception desk was to the right as you enter the hotel.

Behind this main public area if you kept going you came to the pool and the small gym was a little to the right of the pool. The pool was a decent size and had windows which looked out onto the outside so it was light and had an open feel about it. There was someone in there every time I walked passed so it was obviously well used.
The gym was quite small but had an array of different equipment. I saw this in use a couple of times but it wasn't as popular as the pool.

      OUR ROOM
We could either get to our room through the front entrance and then turn down the left hand corridor or go around the back and through a door accessed with our key card which is what we did most of the time.

The room had two queen beds, a tall unit with the TV and some drawers as well as the coffee making bits. Once again a coffee maker with ground coffee, sugar, UHT creamer and tea bags? How do you use a coffee maker to make tea and I can't imagine how disgusting this would be. Anyway we always have our travel kettle because of this strange habit in US hotels so it didn't matter. In this unit the safe was secreted and so we were able to put our valuables in there safely.

On the desk was a light and internet connection although there was free wifi as well so I used that instead. There was also a phone on the desk. The beds shared a bedside table in the middle with a reading light which was a bit annoying as I like to read in bed and my husband falls asleep earlier so he had to put up with the light until I finished reading. The light also went through different stages of lightness and so turning it off required more than just one turn!

The hanging area was in the entrance part of the room just near the bathroom and in there was also an ironing board and iron.

The decor was muted with pale mustard coloured walls and a couple of nice enough framed paintings on the walls. The beds were made up with nice fresh cotton sheets and the throw at the base was a dull sort of grey. The carpet was a blue/grey colour with small pattern which was not offensive at all.

I did love the fact that we had a huge picture window and that it looked out onto a mown piece of grass with trees and there was not a building in sight. This meant we didn't have to have net curtains drawn across at all and could enjoy the light coming in through the window.

This had a bath with a shower over it. Once again this was a sort of moulded as one unit plastic bath and side wall so no places where mould could grown in grout which must be so much easier to keep looking clean. The room was decorated tastefully with a tiled floor and wide striped wallpaper in muted creamy colours and a large marble basin surround so there was plenty of room for all my bottles of toiletries that I take with me. There was a small collection of hotel toiletries shampoo, shower gel and soap. The towels were white and quite thick and fluffy and they were changed daily for us despite the fact we hung them up carefully.

This was available from 6.30 till about 10am in the sort side room off the Reception area. This was a pretty good breakfast offering biscuits and gravy and bacon which pleased my husband. Biscuits are a kind of scone and the gravy is a savoury peppery white sauce. I can take or leave it but my husband loves it when in the USA. We had cereals, fresh fruit, instant porridge, muffins, pastries and my favourite warm cinnamon buns. You can only eat one of those as they are pretty sweet but especially nice when warm.

This was a very nice clean hotel with lovely, friendly staff. The only negative is that is was a way out of the city and to find somewhere to eat required quite a long drive unless you wanted a sandwich . This was a bit annoying as we spent the days out driving and sight seeing and would have preferred a hotel with somewhere within walking distance to eat as then we could both enjoy a drink and also we were sick of being in the car by then.

So nothing at all wrong with the hotel especially as our stay was free but shame it was so far from the nearest place to eat. We solved the problem on our second night by eating lunch out and then bringing some fruit for us to eat in the room.

Thanks for reading. This review may be posted on other sited under my same user name.
