Advantages: Location, Cleanliness, Cosy, non-pretentious atmosphere
Disadvantages: Traffic noise, Small rooms
The Mrs and I went to Copenhagen for a long weekend in April 2002 and stayed at the 3 star Hotel Alexandra for 4 nights. We found the hotel very easily; it was situated in the heart of Copenhagen, a 2 minute walk from Central station. From the outside, the building looks quietly impressive. Inside, the reception area was clean and tidy, not overly grand but acceptable. The service, too, was polite and efficient rather than warm (but this might be down to the reserved nature of the Danish). Our intial impressions of the room were a little disappointing; it was small (enough space for twin beds and to walk around them) and the window looked out onto the main street. However, after a few hours, we warmed to it. It was clean, had everything we needed (tv, kettle, safe, comfortable beds) and because of the high ceilings and open view, not claustrophobic at all. The bathroom was small but clean and well organised and even a little stylish (brushed steel taps). Breakfast was included in the package and one of the selling points of the hotel was that breakfast was organic. I'm not sure that I could have told if this was true or not, but the choice was pretty good (cereals, cold meats, cooked breakfast etc) and the food was of good quality. The self service system was pretty chaotic with little help offered, but again service was polite and efficient when asked. The best points of the hotel? It's location; it was very near the middle of everything: 2 minutes walk from Tivoli, Stroget (the main shopping street) and Radhuspladsen (the main square), and it was clean and tidy. The worst points? It's location; being sited on a main road, the noise of traffic was pretty constant. Traffic in Copenhagen is not like in London, however the noise was still noticable. The double windows (not double glazed) in the room tried bravely, but failed to stop the noise. After a while we got used to it. The funniest point? I d
ropped some coins and looked under the bed to find them. Instead of the coins, I found a small sign saying "Yes, we clean under here too". In summary, I travel quite a bit on business around the UK and I've stayed in 4 star hotels that are worse than this. Also, my Mrs, bless her, is pretty fussy and she liked it. So, if you want a decent, clean, tidy hotel for a good price in an excellent location in Copenhagen and you're willing to put up with some traffic noise and small rooms, you could do a lot worse than the Hotel Alexandra.

- 03/06/02 Thanks for all the comments. If you ever get the chance to go, I can recommend Copenhagen. It's got a mix of everything: art, history, shopping, a little nightlife and fine restaurants. Just don't go before May, when it is cold and wet. |

- 01/06/02 Don't suppose I'll ever get to Copenhagen, but it sounds like a Hotel I'd be happy with with if I did. |
