Advantages: beautiful location, excellent staff
Disadvantages: Entertainment is poor
The hotel American in Majorca is situated about 200 metres from a beautiful cove with a sandy beach and gorgeous azure sea.
The hotel itself is on 7 floors with around 90 rooms, the rooms themselves are average for the island, a small bedroom with tv, aircon, bathroom with bath ! , shower etc, most of the rooms have a balcony which overlooks the sea, the views are worth the cost of the room itself.
The hotel is stunning, you walk in to the gorgeous reception, festooned with marble, dark wood everywhere, it really does look classy, the staff are mulit-lingual and extremely efficient.
Now the important stuff - being an all inclusive hotel, most guests will spend the majority of the day around the 3 pools [ 2 small but deep pools and a kids pool] this leads to a shortage of sunbeds and parasols every day, if you don't like getting up at 9 a.m to plant your towel on a sunbed like a conquering colonial force then go elsewhere. Once all the beds and best loctations have been grabbed then its off to the dining room for breakfast
Breakfast : decent choice - full english available [sausages, bacon [horrible], 3 types of eggs, beans, etc also has a good range of continental coissannts, rolls, melon etc, tea, coffee, fruit juices etc
Lunch - buffet style with the usual fare, pasta dishes, rice, chicken, fish with veg and many types of potatos, full salad bar and procuito, melon ,fruit etc
Dinner - again the same type of buffet style, mainly pasta, rice, chicken, fish etc with vegs, potatos, salad etc - desserts [ these are truly awful] weird lemon & orange flavoured stodgey mousse type things, with horrible jelly etc
Barbeque - on the grassy level below the pool there is a nice barbeque every night with the usual stuff, burgers, chicken, steak etc
Pizza - in the downstairs restaurant they serve decent pizza & pasta right up till midnight
Pool bar - toastie, hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers, also has a salad bar with tuns, sardines bread and cakes, biscuits etc
Drink - the beer is watered down, as are most of the spirits, I don't drink much on holiday myself but what i did drink was weak and not very tasty
A special mention must go to the staff manning the poolside snack bar / drinks bar - they are on the go in 2 shifts from 10 a.m [when they start giving out the booze] till midningt, its a constant small queue of people wanting food and drink and they remain cheerful and very helpful throughout, top quality.
The only drawback was the entertainment at night, throughout the day there are games and activities for the kids and these are excellent
but
At night the entertainment is bad, the same games and the same songs for the kids part of the night is a serious bore, they do try with the stuff later on but i couldn't take it after about 3 days, not being drunk might have slowed me down though...
We paid £1,069 for 2 adults and one child for a week all inclusive, best deal we could find was with teletext holidays , this was 4 days before the schools broke up for the summer holidays though. If you are going during the school holiodays be prepared to pay a bit more.
In conclusion the American is a beautiful hotel, in a sensational location with average rooms, decent food & drink and pretty poor entertainment at night
Summary: If you can stand the entertainment, the rest is pretty good
