Advantages: Suberb Location, Couteous Staff

Disadvantages: Breakfasts could have been better

Well it's the hotel London and it's in Paris. Does that count?

The hotel itself is situated on Boulevard des Italiens which is one of the many roads leading away from the Opera house. The nearest Metro station is Opera and the Roissy bus from Charles de Gaulle Airport stops about 5 minutes walk away which is nice and convenient.

The hotel is located on a busy stree (opposite Pizza Hut, next door to McDonalds and near 4 cinemas) but luckily the noise didn't travel up to our 5th floor room. All the rooms are on floors 3 to 5 and although there is a lift, it's tiny and old fashioned and makes you pray for your life every time you venture in.

The staff were pretty friendly, although they didn't seem to speak much English. Each of the rooms has an en suite bathroom with bath and shower, plus hairdryer, wc and sink with nice big mirror. Our room, like most of the others we peeped in when the maids were cleaning, was typically 'French' in its decoration which was nice - in too many hotels these days, you can't tell which country you're in until you walk outside as everything inside is so British / American. The rooms were warm enough for February and the beds were compfy. Each room has a TV (stuck up on a stand from the corner of the room as there's no real space anywhere else) and channels include a selction of French and German as well as American CNN and Eurosport.

The hotel offers breakfast which was enjoyable the first morning, nice the second and kinda boring on the 3rd as it never seemed to change. There were rolls and croissants with various jams and spreads, and fruit and cereal, plus a range of drinks : coffee, tea, hot chocolate, espresso etc.

The clientelle seemed to be fairly varied - tourists, families and business people were all in attendance, but most surprising of all, there were real live French people there - speaking real French!

Nearby there was lots to
see with all the main sites : the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and Sacre Coeur, being less than 15 mins on the underground. There were also plenty of places to eat nearby. We tried lots, and the best were definately a Creperie (whose name I unfortunately cannot remember) in a little alley across from the Hard Rock Cafe, and a wonderful Italian place called Pasta PaPa about 2 mins from the Opera in the other direction.

The hotel was not that cheap (about £30 ppn based on 2 sharing), but then few are in the city centre. It was, however, quite reasonable and the location was superb. Fine for a few nights, but you wouldn't want to stay much longer.

We might just use this hotel on our next trip to Paris. As you say, it's rare these days to find an authentic-looking place to stay. Thanks for the tip!

Sounds like a proper French hotel, and not too expensive either.
