Advantages: Location
Disadvantages: Entertainment
I have just returned from two weeks in Gran Canaria staying in the Hotel Neptuno in the resort of Playa del Ingles. Location This hotel is in a key location, a ten minute walk from the beach and near many of the islands nightspots and shopping centres. When I first explored the area immeadiatly around the hotel I was worried as it backed onto a large collection of bars and clubs. However, during my stay I was not aware of any noise coming from this area. Food I stayed half board and enjoyed the food on offer. All meals were a buffet style with a wide range of food with soup, cold starters, fish, meat pasta, desserts and cheese and fruit. The advantage of a buffet meal is that you can have as much or as little of each food as you want. This can saving buying a meal and then not liking it. Under this system, you can always go back for more. Dinner had two sittings at 6.30 and 8.15 and during your stay, you were assigned the same table every night. Breakfast was also a good meal offering a combination of cooked and continental breakfasts and was sufficient enough for me to not need lunch for a fortnight!! Entertainment During the day there are many activities such as shooting, bowls, fashion shows and water polo. Also, in the evening there is live entertainment two or three nights a week and bingo and quizes on the other days. There were two entertainers at this hotel, one being able to speak good English and one not. This led to us going out most nights as we could not understand it. However, this did lead to some hilarities, on one night, they asked as quiz question phrased exactly like this: "How many lady Queen Elizabeth's have there in England been?!!!" Rooms The rooms are not massive but were clean and had everything I would have wanted. Each room had its own mini-bar which was very reasonably priced. In many cases, cheaper than the main bar in the hotel.
> The only problem I had with the rooms was the television. There was only one English speaking channel available so I was left with the choice of either watching CNN continuously or watching shows like Family Fortunes and The Price is Right in Spanish!! Pool The pool was a decent size and was clean and well kept. There was even a water slide! Although some sunbeds (as always) were reserved early in the morning, there were always spare sunbeds which was nice and made a change. There is also a bar by the pool which offers drinks all day. Overall, this was a very good hotel but it did seem to be very German oriantated. Maybe we just picked the wrong week!
