The Hotel Pulitzer, Amsterdam is part of the Luxury Collection of the Starwood Hotels and Resorts. It has been formed by the amalgamation and renovation of twenty four of the original canal houses. The modernisations have been quite extensive but have been in keeping with the listed nature of the buildings. It has created unusual sprawling hotel in the heart of the old city while retaining the feel of historic canal houses. There are many changes of level (steps up and down) on each floor and there are tight and steep staircases between floors - so much so that the hotel does advise that it cannot be considered disabled or wheelchair friendly. The Pulitzer Hotel is an amazingly complex block of traditional canal houses linked in ingenious ways. Finding your room (or the way out) can be an absolute nightmare. Much of the historic charm of the original houses has been maintained although the hotel simultaneously boast modern top facilities. Our own experience and those of friends and colleagues have at times been extremely disappointing, expecially with respect to service levels in the restaurant. Once a year the hotel hosts the so-called Prinsengracht Concert, which has to be seen to be believed.
